Biography

Short Description

Agostina Livia Pietrantoni was born Livia Pietrantoni on 27 March 1864 in Pozzaglia Sabina, in the Sabine hills of the province of Rieti in Lazio, then part of the recently unified Kingdom of Italy. She was the daughter of Francesco Pietrantoni and Caterina Costantini and grew up in a large, poor peasant household, commonly described as one of eleven children. From early childhood she worked in the fields, including olive groves, and later left home as a young adolescent to labor in Tivoli, first in heavy outdoor work connected with road construction and then in domestic service. Contemporary accounts of her youth stress both material hardship and a marked piety, including a desire for consecrated life that she pursued despite limited education and family need for her wages.

In the mid-1880s she sought admission to the Sisters of Charity of Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret, a congregation founded in the early nineteenth century for service to the poor and the sick. She entered the community in Rome in 1886, received the religious name Agostina, and made her profession the following year. After formation she was assigned to the ancient Ospedale di Santo Spirito in Sassia in Rome, where she spent the remainder of her short religious life. There she worked especially in the tuberculosis ward, nursing male patients under conditions of contagion, overcrowding, and frequent verbal and physical abuse. Sisters and later witnesses remembered her as patient, industrious, and unwilling to abandon difficult patients, even when colleagues advised caution.

Among those she had nursed was Giuseppe Romanelli, a patient who harassed her, issued threats, and was eventually expelled from the hospital. On the evening of 13 November 1894 he attacked her with a knife as she went about her duties, inflicting fatal wounds. She was thirty years old. Reports of her last moments, drawn from the subsequent investigation and from the sisters who found her, describe her calling on the Mother of God and expressing forgiveness of her attacker. Romanelli was later arrested and convicted. Sister Agostina was first buried in Rome’s Campo Verano cemetery; her remains were later transferred to the chapel of her congregation’s generalate in Rome.

A popular reputation for holiness formed around her death and her hospital ministry. The diocesan and Roman processes led to her beatification by Pope Paul VI on 12 November 1972 and her canonization by Pope John Paul II on 18 April 1999. The Church presents her as a model of charity in nursing and of fidelity under threat. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 13 November, the anniversary of her death. She is invoked especially as a patron of nurses. Her life is documented in the acts of her cause, in the homilies of Paul VI and John Paul II, and in the historiography of her congregation; details of her childhood labor and of the precise sequence of the 1894 assault rest on those sources rather than on a large independent contemporary press record.
