Biography

Short Description

Agrippinus of Como, known in Italian as Agrippino, was a bishop of the diocese of Como in northern Italy in the early seventh century. Almost nothing can be established about his origins. No reliable source records a year or place of birth, nor any details of his family, education, or life before he occupied the see. He is known to history essentially as a name in the episcopal succession of Como and as a locally venerated saint. Later Catholic reference works and diocesan tradition place his death in 615, a date that is widely repeated but rests on medieval catalogues and liturgical memory rather than on a surviving contemporary obituary.

Como, at the southern end of Lake Como in what is now Lombardy, had been a Christian bishopric since the late fourth century. Tradition names Saint Felix as its first bishop; Saint Abundius, a more substantial fifth-century figure, is the diocese’s principal patron. By Agrippinus’s lifetime the region belonged to the Lombard Kingdom. The Lombards had entered Italy in the late sixth century, and for a time many of their rulers were Arians, while the Latin-speaking population and its bishops remained Catholic. The early seventh century was a period of gradual change at the Lombard court, associated with Queen Theodelinda and King Agilulf. Agrippinus’s episcopate therefore fell in a politically and religiously complex setting, but no letter, synodal act, or other first-hand document survives to show what part, if any, he played in those events.

Later lists of the bishops of Como present him as a zealous pastor who governed the local church in the years around the beginning of the seventh century, often with an approximate tenure of about 607 to 615. The exact place he occupies in the numbered succession varies among compilers and should not be treated as certain. No writings by Agrippinus are known, and specific stories of miracles, conversions, or dealings with Lombard authorities cannot be verified from contemporary evidence. Such material, where it appears at all, belongs to later pious tradition rather than to documented history. He should not be confused with other early bishops of the same name, notably Agrippinus of Naples in the third century and Agrippinus of Carthage.

He is reported to have died in 615, and his feast has been kept on 17 June. Veneration remained essentially diocesan. A church in Como was dedicated to him, which indicates a local cult, but he does not hold a prominent place in the general Roman Martyrology, and no papal canonization in the later formal sense is recorded. That pattern is typical of many early medieval bishops whose sanctity was recognized by their own churches before the centralized processes of the later Middle Ages. The place of his burial and the later history of any relics are not securely established in sources that can be checked.

Agrippinus of Como is therefore an obscure episcopal saint whose memory was preserved by the church he served even though no narrative life was written, or none has survived. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a Catholic bishop of this name governed the see of Como in the early seventh century, that tradition dates his death to 615, and that the church of Como commemorated him on 17 June. Claims beyond that office, that date, and that local liturgical honor exceed the evidence.
