Biography

Short Description

Agritius (also spelled Agricius) was bishop of Trier (Augusta Treverorum) in the early fourth century and is the first occupant of that see whose existence is confirmed by a contemporary document. His name appears among the bishops who attended the Council of Arles in 314, convened under the authority of the emperor Constantine to address the Donatist controversy in North Africa and related questions of church order in the Western empire. In the conciliar subscriptions he is recorded as bishop of the city of the Treveri, accompanied by a deacon, which places him securely in office by that year. Trier was then one of the principal imperial residences of the West, and the presence of its bishop at Arles reflects both the political weight of the city and the growing organization of the Gallic church after the end of the persecutions.

Nothing reliable is known of his birth, early life, or the date at which he became bishop. Later medieval writers, above all the twelfth-century Gesta Treverorum, constructed an elaborate origin story: that Agritius had been a priest at Antioch, that the empress Helena, mother of Constantine, brought him from the East to Trier, and that he conveyed with him major relics, including the Seamless Robe of Christ later associated with Trier Cathedral, together with other Passion relics. These claims served the prestige of the medieval church of Trier; they are not supported by fourth-century evidence and are treated by modern historians as legend. The same legendary lists insert several earlier bishops (Eucharius, Valerius, Maternus) before Agritius, but he remains the first bishop of Trier attested in a source from his own lifetime.

His successor was Maximinus of Trier, himself a well-attested fourth-century bishop and opponent of Arianism. The year of Agritius’s death is not fixed by a contemporary record; later tradition places it in the late 320s or early 330s, but the figures circulated in martyrologies and encyclopedias (about 329, 332, or 335) are conventional approximations rather than documented dates. He is presumed to have died at Trier while still in office. He was venerated as a saint in the local church; his feast is kept on 13 January, especially in the Diocese of Trier. No formal papal canonization is recorded, as his cult belongs to the era of pre-congregational, local recognition of holiness.

Beyond the Arles subscription and the fact of his episcopate, the biographical record is extremely thin. There is no verified information about a spouse, children, or membership in a religious order, nor a securely identified tomb from his own century. Relics later associated with him were kept at Trier, and his name continued to be invoked in the diocesan calendar, but the historical Agritius is known essentially as the first documented bishop of an imperial capital at a turning point in the public life of the Western church.
