Biography
Agustín Caloca Cortés was a Mexican Roman Catholic diocesan priest and martyr of the Cristero period. He was born on 5 May 1898 in San Juan Bautista del Teúl (El Teúl), in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. He entered the seminary of Guadalajara in Jalisco to prepare for the priesthood. During the Mexican Revolution that seminary was closed, and he continued his studies at the auxiliary seminary of Totatiche, Jalisco, under the direction of Father Cristóbal Magallanes Jara. Caloca was ordained a priest in 1923. He then served in parish ministry and as prefect of the Totatiche seminary, helping Magallanes form seminarians at a time when the Mexican state was tightening legal and political pressure on the Catholic Church.
In the mid-1920s the government of President Plutarco Elías Calles enforced the anticlerical provisions of the 1917 Constitution with new severity. The Calles Law of 1926 restricted public worship, required registration of clergy, and led to the closure of churches and seminaries. Many priests continued their ministry in secret or under constant threat of arrest. Caloca remained at Totatiche as long as he could, assisting both the seminary and the local faithful in western Mexico. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. When it became impossible to keep the seminary open, Magallanes sent the students away, and Caloca helped carry out that dispersal.
In May 1927 both priests were arrested: Magallanes while traveling to celebrate Mass, Caloca at the seminary. They were held locally and then taken under military escort to Colotlán, Jalisco. On 25 May 1927 they were executed by firing squad without trial. Contemporary accounts present both men as meeting death calmly and with forgiveness for their executioners. Caloca was twenty-nine years old. Their killing belonged to a wider pattern of executions of clergy and lay Catholics during the Cristero War (1926–1929), the armed and religious conflict that followed the enforcement of Calles’s anticlerical program.
Pope John Paul II beatified Agustín Caloca Cortés on 22 November 1992 and canonized him in Rome on 21 May 2000, together with Cristóbal Magallanes Jara and other Mexican martyrs of the same era—a group of twenty-five, most of them priests. In the General Roman Calendar they are commemorated on 21 May as Saint Cristóbal Magallanes and Companions; Caloca is also remembered on 25 May, the anniversary of his death. Devotion to the Cristero martyrs is especially strong in Jalisco, Zacatecas, and neighboring regions of western Mexico. Caloca is honored as a young priest who stayed with his seminary and his people under persecution and who died with Magallanes at Colotlán.
