Biography

Short Description

Saint Aignan of Orléans, known in Latin as Anianus and sometimes in French as Agnan, was a fifth-century bishop of Orléans in Roman Gaul and is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Traditional accounts place his birth about 358 in Vienne, in the Dauphiné of what is now southeastern France. He is said to have been sent as a young man to Orléans, where Bishop Evurtius (Saint Euverte) formed him for the clergy and ordained him. When Evurtius died, Aignan was chosen as bishop of Orléans, an event conventionally dated to around 388. He thus belonged to the generation of Gallic bishops who led their cities as imperial power in the West receded.

Later hagiography and the History of the Franks by Gregory of Tours present Aignan as a pastor who strengthened the church in Orléans, cared for the poor, and was remembered above all for his conduct during the Hunnic invasion of Gaul in 451. When Attila advanced on Orléans, the aged bishop is described as organizing the defense of the city and traveling to Arles to seek military aid from the Roman general Flavius Aetius. Miracle stories in the Vita Aniani tell of prayers and processions that sustained the besieged. Historically, Orléans was a principal objective of Attila that year; the city held until Aetius arrived with an alliance that included the Visigoths, after which the Huns withdrew toward the Catalaunian Plains. Aignan’s reputation as defender of Orléans became the center of his legend, even though many narrative details cannot be verified from strictly contemporary records.

According to tradition he died in Orléans on 17 November 453. He was first buried in the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Boeufs. His relics were later translated to a church associated with his name, which grew into the Collegiate Church of Saint-Aignan, an important medieval collegiate foundation and pilgrimage site in Orléans. The cult of Saint Aignan was closely bound to the civic and religious identity of the city. His feast day is 17 November. He is the patron saint of Orléans.

The principal written sources for his life, including the Vita Aniani, were composed well after his death and combine historical memory with hagiographical convention. Fifth-century writers such as Sidonius Apollinaris illustrate the milieu of Gallic bishops but do not supply a full contemporary biography. Modern historians therefore treat the traditional chronology and the more colorful episodes with caution, while accepting that Bishop Anianus was a leading figure at Orléans at the time of the Hunnic war and that veneration of him took root early in the Christian history of the city. The collegiate church that bears his name and the annual feast have preserved his memory in the Orléanais from late antiquity to the present.
