Biography

Short Description

Alanus de Rupe, known in French as Alain de la Roche and in English sometimes as Alan of the Rock, was a fifteenth-century Dominican theologian and preacher whose chief historical importance lies in his energetic promotion of the Rosary and of confraternities dedicated to that devotion. Dominican chroniclers, drawing on the witness of his disciple Cornelius Sneek, state that he was a native of Brittany; other early authors occasionally assigned him a German or Belgian origin, but the Breton identification has remained the usual one. His birth is conventionally placed around 1428, though no contemporary document fixes the year with certainty. He entered the Order of Preachers, studied theology, and in due course became a doctor of theology of the University of Paris, where he also taught.

In the later decades of his life Alanus was connected with the Congregation of Holland, a reform grouping within the Dominican Order that sought a stricter observance of the rule. He preached and lectured in a number of towns in northern France and the Low Countries, among them Lille, Douai, and Ghent, and he held a chair of theology at the University of Rostock. Contemporaries regarded him as a powerful, at times severe, preacher of penance and of Marian devotion. He composed or compiled treatises on the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin and on the manner of reciting the Rosary; some of these texts circulated in manuscript during his lifetime and were printed after his death, though the exact corpus of authentic works remains a matter of scholarly discussion.

Alanus taught that the Rosary in the form of one hundred and fifty Hail Marys, corresponding to the one hundred and fifty Psalms, had been given to Saint Dominic in the thirteenth century as a weapon against heresy, and that the devotion had subsequently fallen into neglect. He claimed that the Virgin Mary had appeared to him, reproved him for his own earlier indifference, and charged him to restore and spread the practice. From about 1470 he devoted himself to founding Rosary confraternities, drawing up statutes for them and encouraging both clergy and laity to enroll. Later historical research has not confirmed a thirteenth-century Dominican origin for the Rosary in the form Alanus described, and his visionary claims belong to the realm of late medieval private revelation; nevertheless his preaching and organizational work gave the devotion a decisive impulse in the decades before it received more formal papal encouragement in the sixteenth century.

He died at the Dominican house in Zwolle on 8 September 1475. Popular piety in some Dominican and Marian circles has long styled him Blessed, yet he was never the object of a formal process of beatification or canonization by the Holy See, and he has no universally recognized feast in the general Roman calendar. His lasting influence is to be found less in any official cult than in the subsequent history of the Rosary, which became one of the most widespread Catholic devotions of the early modern period.
