Biography

Short Description

Alberic Crescitelli (Italian: Alberico Crescitelli; Chinese name Guo Xide) was born on 30 June 1863 at Altavilla Irpina in the province of Avellino, in the recently unified Kingdom of Italy. He pursued priestly studies with a view to the foreign missions and entered the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), a society of apostolic life founded in the nineteenth century to send clergy to territories with little or no established Catholic hierarchy. He was ordained a priest in 1887 and left for China the following year. Assigned to the Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Shaanxi, he spent about twelve years in a mountainous, relatively isolated region of the late Qing empire, where Catholic communities were small, scattered, and served by a handful of foreign missionaries and Chinese catechists.

His work consisted of itinerant pastoral care: learning the local language, visiting Christian villages, administering the sacraments, and instructing catechumens. Period missionary correspondence portrays him as energetic and strict, typical of late-nineteenth-century Italian missionary formation, rather than as a figure around whom a large contemporary cult immediately formed. The Catholic presence in southern Shaanxi existed amid local tensions over religion, custom, and the wider political effects of foreign treaties and missions in China after the mid-nineteenth century. Those tensions sharpened in 1900, when the Yihetuan (Boxer) uprising and related anti-Christian and anti-foreign violence, centered in northern China, also produced attacks on missionaries and Chinese Catholics in neighboring provinces, including Shaanxi.

In July 1900 Crescitelli was seized by a hostile crowd. Ecclesiastical sources compiled for his cause record that he was put to death on 21 July 1900 at Yanzibian (also rendered Yen-tzu-pien), in what is now Ningqiang County, Shaanxi. Traditional hagiographical accounts describe a particularly violent killing; the sequence of events is known mainly through missionary reports and later beatification acts rather than through independent local archives. The Catholic Church judged his death to have been martyrdom in odium fidei, in the same year as many other killings of Christians in China. Individual reconstructions of 1900 remain limited by fragmentary evidence and by the larger political and religious conflicts of the late Qing period.

Pope Pius XII beatified him on 18 February 1951. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 119 other martyrs of China—Chinese lay people, clergy, and foreign missionaries who died between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries—under the collective title of Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions. In the General Roman Calendar their optional memorial is observed on 9 July. Crescitelli is commemorated especially within the PIME tradition and among those who honor the Martyr Saints of China; he is not associated with a separately documented list of particular patronages.
