Biography

Short Description

Albert of Riga, also known as Albert of Buxhoeveden (German: Albrecht von Buxthoeven), was the principal organizer of the Livonian Crusade and the founder of the city of Riga. He was born in the mid-twelfth century at Bexhövede in the north German lands of the Archbishopric of Bremen, into a ministerial family bound in service to that church. His uncle Hartwig of Uthlede, Archbishop of Bremen, advanced his career: Albert became a canon of Bremen Cathedral and, after Bishop Berthold of Livonia was killed in battle in 1198, was appointed to succeed him. Consecrated in 1199, he spent the following year gathering ships and crusaders in northern Germany and sailed to the Baltic in 1200. The chief narrative source for his career is the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, written by a priest who served in the mission Albert directed.

In 1201 Albert established Riga near the mouth of the Daugava as a new episcopal seat and trading town, transferring the bishopric from the earlier, more exposed station at Üxküll (Ikšķile). The foundation was meant to be both a fortress of the Latin church and a commercial center for German merchants. To give the mission a standing military arm, he promoted the creation in 1202 of the Brothers of the Sword (Fratres militiae Christi), a military order confirmed by Pope Innocent III. Together with seasonal crusaders from Saxony, Westphalia, and other German regions, the order carried out the campaigns that brought Livs, Latgalians, Selonians, and, over time, Estonian districts under Christian and German lordship. Papal letters equated service in Livonia with crusading in the Holy Land, a privilege Albert used on repeated recruiting journeys; he is recorded as having crossed the Baltic some thirteen times during his episcopate.

Albert combined pastoral organization with hard politics. He founded a cathedral chapter in Riga, began construction of Riga Cathedral, and laid out churches as conversion proceeded. He had to balance the Sword Brothers, who claimed a share of conquered land, against his own episcopal domain and the rights of converted native elites. Danish expansion in northern Estonia, including the taking of Reval (Tallinn) in 1219, created a rival Latin power on the same frontier. Albert attended the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 and continued to seek papal and imperial confirmations of his title. In the mid-1220s Emperor Frederick II issued privileges that recognized the Livonian church within the imperial framework, though the precise status of Livonia remained contested.

Albert died in Riga in January 1229 and was buried in the cathedral he had founded. He did not live to see Riga raised to an archbishopric, which occurred in 1255, nor the absorption of the Sword Brothers into the Teutonic Order after their defeat at Saule in 1236. His historical importance rests on the foundation of Riga, the implantation of a Latin, German-dominated church and urban culture in the eastern Baltic, and the institutional shape of medieval Livonia. Later ages have judged him variously as missionary bishop, city founder, and agent of crusading conquest; the contemporary record presents him as a determined organizer who spent three decades binding a new colonial church to Rome and to the German Empire.
