Biography

Short Description

Alberto Quadrelli (often rendered in English as Albert Quadrelli), a twelfth-century Italian Catholic prelate later venerated as blessed, is traditionally said to have been born in 1103 at Rivolta d'Adda in Lombardy, a settlement on the Adda river in what was then imperial Italy. He came from a local family and entered the secular clergy of the diocese of Lodi, eventually becoming a canon of the cathedral chapter. Surviving notices of his early career are sparse, as is typical for many north-Italian clerics of this period; later local tradition emphasizes piety, personal austerity, and competence in the administration of church property. His formation and ministry unfolded in an age still marked by the aftermath of the Investiture Controversy and by intense communal politics among the Lombard cities.

In 1168 the chapter of Lodi elected Quadrelli bishop of the see. The city and diocese had only recently been reconstituted: Milan had destroyed old Lodi in 1158, and the settlement was refounded with the backing of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. Quadrelli thus inherited a church that needed pastoral reconstruction as well as the defence of its rights amid the wars of the Lombard League. Hagiographic and diocesan tradition presents him as a resident bishop who sought to restore regular worship, care for the poor, and the discipline of the clergy rather than as a major actor in imperial or papal diplomacy. Precise documentary detail of individual acts of his government is limited; catalogues of the bishops of Lodi and later necrological memory remain the principal anchors for the length and character of his episcopate.

Quadrelli died at Lodi on 4 July 1173 and was buried in the cathedral. A local cult developed around his tomb. The Church of Lodi kept his memory, and he is honoured as Blessed Alberto Quadrelli, with his feast observed on 4 July. He was not the principal patron of the city (that dignity belongs to Saint Bassianus) and he is not known to have been the subject of a modern, fully documented papal canonization; recognition rests on the older local cult typical of many medieval Italian bishops. Historical knowledge of his life therefore remains modest: a canon of Lodi, bishop from 1168, dead in 1173, thereafter commemorated in his cathedral church. Claims beyond that outline, including many later miracle stories, cannot be verified from contemporary sources and should be treated as pious tradition rather than established fact.
