Biography

Short Description

Alchmund of Hexham, whose name is also recorded in the forms Alhmund and Ealhmund, was an eighth-century bishop of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. Surviving sources do not give his year or place of birth, nor any reliable account of his family, education, or life before he entered episcopal office. He is first securely attested in 767, when he was consecrated Bishop of Hexham after the death of his predecessor Frithubeorht. The church and monastery at Hexham had been founded in the late seventh century by Saint Wilfrid on land associated with Queen Æthelthryth, and dedicated to Saint Andrew. By Alchmund’s day the see was an established religious centre in the north, closely tied to the memory of Wilfrid and of Bishop Acca, who had earlier enriched the church and its library.

Alchmund held the bishopric for about fourteen years. Northumbria in that period was politically unstable, with repeated changes of king, but the chronicles that preserve Northumbrian annals—material later used by Symeon of Durham—register little more than Alchmund’s accession and his death. No letters, synodal acts, or other writings by him are known to survive, and there is no evidence that he held any higher title such as archbishop, patriarch, or pope. Like other early bishops of Hexham he would have combined diocesan pastoral care with the life of the monastic community attached to the church of Saint Andrew. Nothing in the record associates him with a spouse or with children, which is consistent with the monastic character of the Hexham community.

He died in 781. Later liturgical tradition assigned 7 September as the date of his death and as his feast. He was buried outside the church at Hexham, beside the tomb of Saint Acca. For a long time the grave seems to have received little honour. According to a narrative preserved in Hexham tradition and reported by later medieval writers, Alchmund appeared in a vision to a man named Dregmo and complained that his remains lay neglected, commanding that they be taken into the church. The community then translated his relics and laid them within the church, near those of Acca. Accounts of this translation are commonly placed in the early eleventh century, well after the Viking disruptions that had earlier affected Northumbria.

Thereafter Alchmund was venerated locally as a saint. His feast on 7 September entered northern English calendars and martyrologies, and Hexham Abbey remained the centre of his cult. His relics, together with those of Acca and other Hexham saints, formed part of the sacred identity of the church. No widespread patronages of places, trades, illnesses, or causes are securely attached to his name. Because he lived long before the age of formal papal canonization, his recognition as a saint rested on local cult, episcopal lists, and liturgical commemoration rather than on a documented process of canonization or beatification by a named pope. The historical Alchmund thus remains a somewhat obscure figure: a Northumbrian bishop whose dates of office and death can be fixed with reasonable confidence, whose burial and later translation at Hexham are attested in medieval narrative, and whose cult was real but regional. Beyond those facts the sources do not permit a fuller biography.
