Biography

Short Description

Alcuin of York, known in Latin as Flaccus Albinus Alcuinus and in Old English as Ealhwine, was an Anglo-Saxon scholar, deacon, poet, and teacher who became the leading intellectual of the Carolingian court. He was born in the kingdom of Northumbria, in what is now northern England, in the second quarter of the eighth century. No contemporary source records an exact year or place of birth; later tradition often places him at or near York around the 730s, but that dating is an estimate rather than a documented fact. He was educated at the cathedral school of York under Archbishop Egbert, a pupil of Bede, and under Ælberht, who succeeded Egbert. Alcuin later directed the school himself and helped make its library one of the most important in Western Europe. His long poem on the bishops, kings, and saints of York is a principal witness to that community and to the learning available in eighth-century Northumbria.

In 781, while returning from Rome, where he had gone to obtain the pallium for Archbishop Eanbald I of York, Alcuin met Charlemagne at Parma. The Frankish king invited him to take charge of the palace school. Alcuin accepted and was established at the court, then chiefly at Aachen, by about 782. There he taught members of the royal family, reorganized the palace school, and gathered a circle of scholars that included Theodulf of Orléans, Paul the Deacon, Peter of Pisa, and Einhard. He promoted the seven liberal arts as the foundation of clerical and court education, encouraged a clearer Latin style, and supported the reform of book-hand that produced Carolingian minuscule, a script later associated especially with the Tours scriptorium. He remained a deacon throughout his life and was never ordained priest.

Alcuin was a central figure in the theological and liturgical work of Charlemagne’s reign. He wrote against the Spanish Adoptionist teaching associated with Elipandus of Toledo and Felix of Urgel, and he took part in the wider controversy over images connected with the Libri Carolini, though modern scholarship generally assigns the principal authorship of that dossier to Theodulf rather than to Alcuin. He helped revise liturgical books and produced a recension of the Latin Bible that circulated as the so-called Alcuin Bible. His educational treatises on grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic, together with biblical commentaries, riddles, and verse, were copied for centuries in monastic and cathedral schools.

In 796 Charlemagne appointed him abbot of Saint Martin at Tours, a wealthy and influential house, although Alcuin himself was a secular cleric rather than a professed monk. At Tours he directed a major scriptorium, continued to advise the court by letter, and maintained a correspondence of which more than three hundred letters survive. Those letters are among the most important narrative sources for Frankish and English affairs in the late eighth century. He died at Tours on 19 May 804 and was buried in the church of Saint Martin. He was never formally canonized by the papacy, but he was venerated locally, especially at Tours and in England. His commemoration falls on 19 May in several calendars and on 20 May in some Anglican uses. His lasting reputation rests on his role in transmitting classical and patristic learning, in shaping Carolingian educational and liturgical reform, and in linking the Northumbrian scholarly tradition of Bede’s century with the Frankish church and court.
