Biography

Short Description

Aldetrude of Maubeuge (also known as Aldetrudis, Adeltrude, Adeltrudis, or, in Italian sources, Aldetrude di Maubeuge) was a seventh-century Frankish noblewoman and abbess of the monastery of Maubeuge in Hainaut, in the Merovingian kingdom of the Franks. She belonged to one of the best-known saintly kinships of later Merovingian Austrasia. Her mother was Saint Waltrude (Waudru), foundress of the religious community at Mons; her father was Saint Madelgarus, also called Vincent of Soignies, a count who later entered monastic life. Her maternal aunt was Saint Aldegonde, foundress of Maubeuge Abbey. Tradition names her siblings as Saint Landry (Landericus), later bishop of Meaux; Saint Dentelin, who died in childhood and was locally venerated; and Saint Madelberta, who likewise became an abbess of Maubeuge. The family’s endowment of houses at Mons, Soignies, and Maubeuge is characteristic of the high aristocracy of Hainaut in this period, when monastic foundation served both piety and the organization of family property.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Aldetrude was given to the religious life at Maubeuge, the community established by Aldegonde around the middle of the seventh century. The house stood in the pagus of Hainaut, on what is now the Franco-Belgian border (the modern town of Maubeuge lies in France). Like other aristocratic women of her milieu, she would have been formed in psalmody, the liturgy, and the rule of the monastery. Merovingian female houses in this region commonly followed mixed Columbanian and Benedictine usages; later tradition uniformly describes Maubeuge as Benedictine, and Aldetrude is therefore usually listed as a Benedictine abbess. After the death of Aldegonde, commonly placed in the 680s, Aldetrude is said to have succeeded as abbess. Her sister Madelberta is also recorded as abbess of the same monastery, which suggests that the founding family retained a dynastic role in the community’s leadership for more than one generation.

Medieval notices portray Aldetrude as a model of monastic humility, prayer, and care for her sisters, but the surviving narratives are late, conventional, and not contemporary biographies. One frequently repeated episode, set in her youth, tells of a veil or piece of linen carried off by the wind; she prayed, and the object was miraculously restored, a story meant to illustrate simplicity and divine favor rather than to supply a datable event. Other remarks credit her with visions and with a reputation for sanctity during her lifetime. Independent charter evidence for her abbacy is lacking, as is typical for Merovingian nunneries whose archives have not survived in quantity. Historians therefore treat the outline of her life—noble birth in Hainaut, profession at Maubeuge, and death there as abbess—as consistent with the better-attested careers of Waltrude and Aldegonde, while remaining cautious about legendary detail.

Aldetrude is held to have died at Maubeuge toward the close of the seventh century. Later martyrologies and local tradition commonly assign her death to 25 February, often in or about the year 696, and she was buried at her monastery. A cult grew up in Hainaut and northern Francia beside those of her mother, aunt, and sisters. Her feast is kept on 25 February. She was venerated by popular acclaim and local episcopal recognition in the manner of the early Middle Ages, long before centralized papal canonization. No specific later patronages of places, trades, or causes can be securely attached to her name from early sources. Beyond her place in the holy kinship of Waltrude and Aldegonde, whose monasteries at Mons and Maubeuge were central to aristocratic Christianity in seventh-century Hainaut, the historical Aldetrude remains sparsely documented.
