Biography

Short Description

Aleksandr Ivanovich Tuberovsky was a priest and theologian of the Russian Orthodox Church who was executed during the Soviet repressions of the 1930s and later glorified as a hieromartyr. He was born in 1881 in the village of Makkaveevo, in the Kasimov district of Ryazan Governorate in the Russian Empire, the son of a parish priest. Raised in the clerical estate that supplied much of the empire’s church personnel, he followed the customary educational path of a future clergyman, studying at the Kasimov Theological School and the Ryazan Theological Seminary before entering the Moscow Theological Academy. He completed his training there in the early twentieth century with the degree of candidate of theology, which opened the way to teaching in the church’s higher schools.

In the years before 1917 he taught homiletics, liturgics, and pastoral subjects, including a period at the Bethany Theological Seminary associated with the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and then joined the faculty of the Moscow Theological Academy, where he became a professor. His principal scholarly work was a study of the Resurrection of Christ, framed as a mystical and dogmatic treatment of a central Christian tenet. He was ordained to the priesthood and raised to the rank of archpriest, combining academic work with pastoral office. In 1917–1918 he took part in the All-Russian Local Council, which restored the Moscow patriarchate and sought to reorganize church life amid the collapse of the imperial regime.

After the Bolsheviks closed the theological academies and intensified the campaign against the Church, Tuberovsky continued to serve as a parish priest. The 1920s and 1930s brought confiscation of church property, show trials, exile of bishops, and the treatment of clergy as class enemies. During the Great Terror of 1937 he was arrested by the NKVD, charged with counter-revolutionary activity of the kind routinely alleged against priests, and condemned to death by an extrajudicial troika. On 23 December 1937 he was shot at the Butovo firing range near Moscow, a principal site of mass executions, and was buried in an unmarked mass grave there.

The Russian Orthodox Church glorified him as a hieromartyr at the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of August 2000, numbering him among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia; he is also remembered with those killed at Butovo. Surviving documentation is typical of many repressed clergy of his generation: education, academic posts, council membership, and the circumstances of arrest and death can be reconstructed from church and archival sources, while intimate details of his household and the precise sequence of later parish assignments remain sparsely recorded in published accounts.
