Biography

Short Description

Alessandro Luzzago was born in 1551 in Brescia, a city of the Venetian mainland in northern Italy, into a family of the local nobility. He received a careful Christian upbringing and a humanist education typical of the Italian aristocracy of the later sixteenth century. As a young man he studied at the University of Padua, then one of the principal centers of legal learning in Europe, and took a doctorate in civil and canon law. He also devoted himself to philosophy and theology and came under the influence of the spiritual and educational ideals of the Society of Jesus, which had recently taken root in the Venetian territories and in Lombardy.

Although Luzzago felt a strong attraction to the Jesuit vocation and wished to enter the Society, opposition from his family—especially after the death of his father, when his mother relied upon him—prevented him from doing so. He therefore remained in the lay state, embracing celibacy and intense personal piety without taking religious vows or receiving holy orders. In this he belonged to a current of Counter-Reformation lay devotion that sought holiness in the world rather than in the cloister or the sanctuary.

Returning to Brescia, he placed his learning and his social position at the service of the Church. He was particularly active in the teaching of Christian doctrine, catechizing children and adults in an age when the Council of Trent had made systematic catechesis a pastoral priority. He cooperated with the Jesuits of Brescia and with local confraternities in works of charity, visiting the poor, the sick, and those in prison, and supporting educational initiatives. Contemporary witnesses remembered him as austere in his personal habits, given to prayer and mortification, and generous in almsgiving.

Luzzago died in Brescia in 1602. A reputation for holiness persisted after his death, and in due course a cause for his beatification was introduced. The Catholic Church has recognized the heroic character of his virtues and has declared him Venerable; he has not been beatified or canonized. His memory is that of a noble layman of post-Tridentine Italy who combined legal and theological culture with a life of apostolic service and personal asceticism.
