Biography

Short Description

Alexander Yaroslavich, later known as Alexander Nevsky, was a thirteenth-century prince of Novgorod and grand prince of Vladimir, and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was born in 1221 at Pereslavl-Zalessky, in the northeastern Rus' principality of Vladimir-Suzdal, the son of Yaroslav Vsevolodovich (later Grand Prince Yaroslav II of Vladimir) and a princess commonly identified as Feodosia, daughter of Mstislav Mstislavich of Galich. A member of the Rurikid dynasty, he was as a youth installed as prince in Novgorod, a wealthy commercial republic that customarily invited princes of the Vladimir-Suzdal house to serve as military commanders while retaining its own veche and institutions. His early career unfolded against the background of the Mongol invasion of Rus' in the late 1230s, which devastated the principalities of the northeast and the south and left Novgorod tributary but unconquered.

Alexander's historical reputation rests above all on two campaigns against Western opponents. In 1240 he defeated a Swedish expedition on the Neva River, an engagement from which he received the byname Nevsky. In April 1242 he commanded Novgorodian and Suzdalian forces in a victory over the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order and its allies on the ice of Lake Peipus, known as the Battle on the Ice. Medieval Rus' sources and later Russian tradition present these battles as the defense of Orthodox Rus' against Latin crusading pressure from Sweden and Livonia. Modern historians continue to debate the size of the forces involved, the strategic stakes, and the degree to which the conflicts were religious wars rather than frontier contests over tribute and trade routes in the eastern Baltic.

After the Mongol conquest, Alexander adopted a policy of submission to the Golden Horde. He traveled repeatedly to the khan's court to secure patents to rule, accepted the census and tribute, and used Horde support to strengthen his position against rival princes, including his brother Andrey. In 1252 he became Grand Prince of Vladimir. He resisted proposals for a military alliance with the papacy and the Latin West against the Mongols, a stance that later Orthodox tradition interpreted as preservation of the faith. He also acted firmly against anti-Mongol unrest in Novgorod. Historians have long argued over whether this course was prudent statecraft that spared northeastern Rus' further devastation and kept the Orthodox Church intact, or a collaboration that bound the land more tightly to Horde overlordship; the sources show a prince navigating limited options between the Horde, Novgorod, and his kinsmen.

Alexander died in November 1263 at Gorodets on the Volga, while returning from a journey to the Horde. Shortly before his death he received the monastic tonsure and the great schema, taking the name Alexy. His body was brought to Vladimir and buried in the Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos. He had married, traditionally in 1239, a daughter of Prince Bryachislav of Polotsk, named in later sources Alexandra; their children included Vasily, Dmitry, Andrey, and Daniel. Daniel became prince of Moscow and ancestor of the Muscovite grand princes and tsars, so that Alexander stands in the genealogical line of the later Russian monarchy.

Veneration of Alexander as a holy prince is attested from the later fourteenth century, in connection with Muscovite political ideology and the memory of resistance to the Horde, notably around the time of the Battle of Kulikovo. A hagiographical Life, drawing on chronicle material, circulated in several redactions. The Russian Orthodox Church formally numbered him among the saints at the Moscow council of 1547 under Metropolitan Macarius. In 1724 Peter I transferred the relics from Vladimir to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in the new capital of Saint Petersburg, identifying the medieval prince with the defense of the Neva and with imperial Russia. His principal feast days in the Orthodox calendar are 23 November (repose) and 30 August (translation of the relics). He is regarded as a patron of Russia and of soldiers. In the twentieth century his image was widely used in Russian and Soviet culture, including Sergei Eisenstein's 1938 film, as a symbol of national defense.
