Biography

Short Description

Alexander of Rome is an early Christian martyr venerated principally together with the companions Eventius and Theodulus. Their cult was localized at a cemetery and later basilica on the Via Nomentana outside Rome. Medieval martyrologies often identified this Alexander with Pope Alexander I, who traditionally governed the Roman church in the early second century, but the papal burial at the Vatican and the distinct sanctuary at the seventh mile of the Nomentan Way have led modern hagiographers to treat the priest-martyr of the Via Nomentana as a separate person. The entity recorded under Wikidata Q2643466, distinct from that of the pope, corresponds to this martyr of the Nomentan group. No reliable source records his parentage, place of birth, or the year in which he was born.

The Latin Passio of Alexander, Eventius and Theodulus, compiled in late antiquity, relates that Alexander was a priest whose preaching converted many in Rome. He and his two companions were arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. The emperor under whom they suffered is named inconsistently in the manuscript tradition as Trajan, Hadrian, or Aurelian, a chronological span that underlines the legendary nature of the narrative. Eventius and Theodulus are said to have been burned alive; Alexander is described as having been pierced with many wounds until he died. These episodes follow the conventional patterns of late antique martyr literature and cannot be confirmed by contemporary documents or by archaeology beyond the fact of an early cult.

A cemetery ad septimum on the Via Nomentana contained the tombs associated with the three martyrs, and by the fifth century a basilica of Saint Alexander had been built there. The names appear in the Martyrologium Hieronymianum and in early Roman liturgical books. Pilgrims visited the site in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. The basilica subsequently declined, yet the feast of Alexander, Eventius and Theodulus on 3 May remained in the Roman Martyrology. Relics attributed to the group were later translated to various churches. The topographical and liturgical evidence thus attests a genuine ancient veneration, even though the biographical story attached to the names is not historically verifiable.

Nothing certain is known of Alexander’s family life. As a priest of the pre-Constantinian Roman church he would not have belonged to a monastic religious order of the later medieval type. Whether he was married or had children is unrecorded. He did not hold the office of pope or of patriarch. Like other martyrs of the first centuries he was honored as a saint by popular and liturgical cult long before the development of formal papal canonization. No distinctive patronages of places, professions, or causes are securely documented for this Alexander as distinct from other saints of the same name. Several other Roman martyrs called Alexander are known, including a soldier-martyr in Eastern calendars and one of the sons of Saint Felicity; the present notice concerns only the Alexander linked with Eventius, Theodulus, and the Via Nomentana sanctuary. The historian is therefore limited to acknowledging a Roman martyr of uncertain date, commemorated on 3 May, whose tomb became a center of devotion, while remaining silent where the sources do not permit verification.
