Biography

Short Description

Alexander Peresvet, whose name is also given as Aleksandr Peresvet, was a Russian Orthodox monk of the fourteenth century, remembered above all as a warrior who fell at the Battle of Kulikovo on 8 September 1380. No contemporary source preserves the year or the precise circumstances of his birth. Later hagiographic tradition, widely repeated in Russian historical writing, describes him as a boyar from Bryansk who had been trained in arms before he received the monastic tonsure at the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the house that would become the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. In that tradition he and another monk of the same community, Rodion Oslyabya (also called Andrei Oslyabya), were chosen by Sergius to accompany Grand Prince Dmitry Ivanovich of Moscow on the campaign against Mamai, the powerful temnik of the Golden Horde. The blessing of the two monks was understood as a spiritual sanction of the war and as a sign that the defense of the land was also a defense of the Orthodox faith.

The episode that made Peresvet famous is the single combat said to have opened the battle on Kulikovo Field, near the upper Don in the forest-steppe of what is now Tula Oblast. According to the Kulikovo cycle of texts, especially later redactions of the Tale of the Battle with Mamai, a Horde champion named Chelubey (Temir-murza in some versions) rode out between the armies and challenged the Russians to send a champion. Peresvet accepted. Accounts differ in detail: some describe him as wearing the monastic schema over armor; all agree that the two riders charged with lances and that both were mortally wounded. In the most familiar version, Chelubey was struck from the saddle while Peresvet, though dying, remained mounted and was carried back to his own lines, an omen read as favorable to Dmitry’s army. The battle that followed was hard-fought and bloody, but it ended in a Russian victory that later generations regarded as a turning point in the long struggle to throw off the suzerainty of the Horde. Dmitry received the epithet Donskoy from the river Don.

Peresvet died on the field in 1380. Church tradition states that he and Oslyabya were buried in Moscow at the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the Old Simonov Monastery (Stary Simonov), where their tombs were long pointed out. Fourteenth-century documentary evidence for his biography beyond participation in the campaign is lacking. The principal literary sources belong to the fifteenth century and after; they combine memory of the battle with epic convention and pious legend, and modern historians therefore distinguish the well-attested fact of the 1380 campaign from the uncorroborated particulars of the duel and of Peresvet’s Bryansk origin. He was not a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and there is no reliable record of a wife or of children; the sources present him as a monk under vows.

The Russian Orthodox Church venerates Alexander Peresvet as a saint, together with Andrei Oslyabya. Their principal feast is 7 September, on the eve of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the liturgical date of the battle. They are also commemorated with the saints of Radonezh and of Moscow. Peresvet has been regarded as a heavenly protector of Russian warriors. His figure appears in icons, often in the schema and sometimes on horseback, and his name has been given to churches, to the town of Peresvet in Moscow Oblast, and to ships and military formations. Although the surviving record of his life is thin and in part legendary, his place in the religious and national memory of medieval Rus' has remained secure from the late Middle Ages to the present.
