Biography

Short Description

Schema-nun Alexandra of Diveyevo, known in the world as Agafia Semyonovna Melgunova, was an eighteenth-century Russian noblewoman and the foundress of the women’s community at Diveyevo, later the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery. She came of a landowning family, married, and had a daughter. After her husband’s death she turned from household life to pilgrimage and prayer, giving away much of her property. Surviving sources do not preserve a verified year or place of birth; later monastery tradition simply places her among the Russian provincial nobility of the eighteenth century and describes her widowhood as the turning point of her life.

According to the chronicle tradition of Diveyevo, while she was at the Kiev Caves Lavra the Mother of God appeared to her and commanded her to go north, to the district of the Sarov Hermitage, and there to found a community that would be the Mother of God’s fourth earthly lot, after Iveria, Mount Athos, and Kiev. With the blessing of the Sarov elders she settled at the village of Diveyevo in the second half of the eighteenth century. She built a church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, gathered a small sisterhood, and lived in poverty and manual labor under Sarov’s spiritual direction. She received the great schema and the name Alexandra. The community remained modest in her lifetime; its later growth belongs to the generations after her death.

The young Prokhor Moshnin, afterward St. Seraphim of Sarov, knew her during his early years at Sarov. Diveyevo tradition holds that she and the Sarov elders entrusted the future of the sisterhood to his care, and that he later organized the mill community and the stricter rule associated with the convent’s expansion. Accounts of Alexandra’s own life stress humility, unceasing prayer, and obedience rather than a cycle of public miracles recorded in her lifetime. Precise dates for her arrival, the consecration of the Kazan church, and the clothing in the schema are not independently fixed beyond the general framework of the 1760s–1780s.

Schema-nun Alexandra died on 13 June 1789 and was buried at the Kazan church in Diveyevo. Local memory of her as foundress persisted through the nineteenth century, especially as the monastery linked her name with St. Seraphim. In 2000 her relics were uncovered together with those of Schema-nun Martha and Nun Elena of Diveyevo, and she was glorified among the saints of the Russian Orthodox Church. She is commemorated on 13 June in the Julian calendar (26 June in the Gregorian calendar) and with the Synaxis of the Saints of Diveyevo. Her relics are kept at the Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery.
