Biography

Short Description

Princess Alix Victoria Helena Louise Beatrice of Hesse and by Rhine was born in 1872 in Darmstadt, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, a daughter of Queen Victoria. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church and spent her childhood between the Hessian court and the British royal family, to whom she remained closely attached. In 1878 a diphtheria outbreak in Darmstadt killed her mother and her younger sister Marie; the loss left Alix under the strong personal influence of Queen Victoria. Contemporaries described her as shy, intense, and devout, with a reserved manner that later contrasted sharply with the ceremonial world of the Russian court.

In 1894 she married Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarevich of Russia, after a courtship that overcame her reluctance to abandon Lutheranism. She was received into the Russian Orthodox Church and took the name Alexandra Feodorovna. Emperor Alexander III died shortly after their engagement, so Nicholas succeeded as emperor and the wedding took place in an atmosphere of court mourning. As Empress of Russia from 1894 she never fully adapted to St. Petersburg society. She preferred a secluded family life at Tsarskoye Selo, remained devoted to her husband, and was widely regarded as distant. Her German birth and her insistence on a high view of autocracy contributed to lasting unpopularity among parts of the Russian elite and the wider public.

The couple had five children: Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia, and Tsarevich Alexei, born in 1904. Alexei suffered from hemophilia, transmitted through Alexandra’s descent from Queen Victoria. The empress’s search for relief for her son led her to rely on the Siberian starets Grigori Rasputin, whose apparent ability to ease the heir’s bleeding episodes gave him extraordinary access to the imperial couple. That association, together with Alexandra’s interventions in ministerial appointments during the First World War while Nicholas was at army headquarters, deepened public hostility and fueled rumors of German intrigue and court corruption.

After the February Revolution of 1917 the imperial family was placed under house arrest, first at the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo, then at Tobolsk in Siberia, and finally at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. In July 1918, during the Russian Civil War, local Bolshevik authorities executed Nicholas, Alexandra, their five children, and several attendants. The bodies were concealed; remains later identified as those of the emperor, empress, and three of the children were interred in 1998 in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, with further remains associated with Alexei and one daughter buried there in a later decade.

The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia glorified the family as new martyrs in 1981. The Moscow Patriarchate canonized Nicholas, Alexandra, and their children as passion-bearers in 2000, commemorating them on 17 July, the date of the Yekaterinburg killings. Alexandra is thus remembered in Orthodox tradition not as a political actor but as a wife and mother who shared the family’s imprisonment and death. Historical assessments continue to distinguish her private piety and family devotion from the political consequences of Rasputin’s influence and of her role in wartime government.
