Biography
Alexandru Rusu was a bishop of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church who died in communist imprisonment and was later beatified as a martyr. He was born on 22 November 1884 in the Transylvanian village of Șăulia, then in Austria-Hungary and now in Mureș County, Romania. After studies at the Greek-Catholic theological academy in Blaj and further formation in Budapest, he was ordained a priest in 1910. In the following two decades he taught theology, served in the metropolitan curia at Blaj, and became known as a capable administrator and educator within a church that had gained new institutional freedom after Transylvania’s union with the Kingdom of Romania in 1918.
Pope Pius XI erected the Eparchy of Maramureș in 1930 and named Rusu its first bishop; he received episcopal consecration in 1931. From his see he worked to establish parishes, schools, and charitable works among Greek-Catholics in Maramureș, a mountainous region of mixed Romanian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, and Jewish populations. During the Second World War and the subsequent Soviet occupation of Romania, the Greek-Catholic hierarchy came under growing political pressure. After the death of Metropolitan Alexandru Nicolescu, the remaining bishops in 1946 elected Rusu metropolitan of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, the principal see of the Romanian Church United with Rome; the Holy See did not confirm the election amid the rapidly worsening political situation, and he remained Bishop of Maramureș.
In 1948 the communist government of Romania declared the Greek-Catholic Church illegal and attempted to absorb it into the Romanian Orthodox Church. Bishop Rusu refused to recognize the forced “reunion” or to break communion with Rome. He was arrested in the autumn of 1948 and spent the rest of his life in detention. Like other imprisoned Greek-Catholic bishops, he was held at Sighet and later at Gherla, subjected to isolation, inadequate food, and denial of medical care. He died in Gherla prison on 9 May 1963, after more than fourteen years of confinement.
On 2 June 2019 Pope Francis, through his legate Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, beatified Alexandru Rusu together with six other Romanian Greek-Catholic bishops who had died as a result of the same persecution: Valeriu Traian Frențiu, Vasile Aftenie, Ioan Bălan, Tit Liviu Chinezu, Iuliu Hossu, and Ioan Suciu. The ceremony took place at Blaj, the historic center of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. Blessed Alexandru Rusu is commemorated with his companions on 2 June and is honored as a witness who remained faithful to communion with the See of Rome under totalitarian oppression.
