Biography

Short Description

Alexia González-Barros González was born in Madrid, Spain, on 7 March 1971, the youngest of seven children of Francisco González-Barros and María del Rosario González. She grew up in a large, practising Catholic household closely linked to the apostolate of Opus Dei. Family life was marked by daily prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments, and a straightforward Christian formation. Those who knew her as a child described a lively, affectionate, and strong-willed girl who combined ordinary school and family interests with a simple piety and an early desire to belong entirely to God. She took part in Christian formation activities for girls associated with Opus Dei and, as she entered adolescence, spoke of a possible vocation as a numerary of the prelature, though she remained a lay child and was never a member of a religious order.

In February 1985, when she was thirteen, Alexia began to suffer severe pain in her neck and shoulder. Examination revealed a malignant tumour enveloping the cervical spinal cord. She underwent a first operation in Madrid in March 1985 and was then transferred to the Clínica Universidad de Navarra in Pamplona for further surgery and treatment. Subsequent operations and the progress of the disease left her almost completely paralysed, able to move only her head. She spent the remaining months of her life in hospital, undergoing radiotherapy and enduring progressive physical decline while remaining fully conscious.

Throughout her illness she offered her sufferings explicitly for the Church, for the Pope, for priests, and for the conversion of souls. Witnesses—family, physicians, nurses, and other patients—later testified to her patience, her concern for those who cared for her, her frequent reception of the Eucharist, and a spiritual maturity that struck many as unusual in a girl of fourteen. She prayed the rosary, spoke of wanting only the will of God, and, when she could, tried to keep a cheerful disposition. She died in Pamplona on 5 December 1985. Her body was taken to Madrid for the funeral and burial in the Cementerio de la Almudena.

A reputation for holiness attached to her memory almost at once, especially among families facing grave illness in children and in circles connected with Opus Dei in Spain. The Archdiocese of Madrid opened a cause of beatification; the diocesan inquiry was carried out in the 1990s and the positio on her life and virtues was later submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On 5 July 2018 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing that she had practised the theological and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree, and she was thereby declared Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and she has no official liturgical feast or approved patronages. Devotion to her remains private and unofficial, concentrated in Spain and among those who commend to God children and young people suffering from cancer or other serious disease.
