Biography

Short Description

Saint Alexius of Rome, also called Alexis or, in Greek, Alexios, is a saint of the Christian Church whose biography survives only in legendary form. Modern historians distinguish an earlier Eastern tradition from a later Roman one. The Syriac legend of the Man of God of Edessa, which appears to have taken shape in the fifth or sixth century, recounts that a nameless ascetic of distinguished family left home, lived by alms at a church in Edessa in Mesopotamia in the days of Bishop Rabbula (who occupied that see in the early fifth century), and was recognized as a holy man only after his death, when a document revealing his story was found on his body. Greek recensions later supplied the name Alexios. In the tenth century this material was adapted in the West into a fully Roman vita that made the saint the son of a senatorial household in the city of Rome itself.

In that Western narrative, which circulated widely in Latin and in vernacular versions such as the Golden Legend, Alexius is the only child of the rich Christian senator Euphemianus and his wife Aglae. After a devout youth he consents under parental pressure to marriage, but on the wedding night he explains his vocation to his bride, leaves her a ring and a portion of his veil as a pledge, and secretly quits Rome. He makes his way to Edessa, where for seventeen years he sits among the poor at the entrance of a church of the Theotokos, giving away surplus alms. A miraculous image or a vision that identifies him as the Man of God causes crowds to seek him out; to preserve his hidden life he boards a ship intending to go farther east, but a storm or divine direction brings him back to the Italian coast and to Rome.

There, still unrecognized, he asks hospitality at his own father's door and is allowed to live in a cubbyhole beneath the staircase of the family palace. For a further seventeen years he endures the mockery of servants, watches his parents and his faithful wife (who has remained in the house as a widow in all but name) mourn him as lost, and practices extreme austerity. At his death a voice is heard in a Roman church—accounts often place Pope Innocent I and the emperor Honorius among those present—commanding that the Man of God be sought in the house of Euphemianus. The dying or already dead saint is found holding a written testament of his life; only then do his father, mother, and wife recognize him. He is buried with great honor. Because the story is hagiographical and the only plausible historical nucleus is the anonymous fifth-century beggar of Edessa, no verified year of birth or death can be given.

The Roman cult is historically attested from the late tenth century. Around 977 Archbishop Sergius of Damascus, a Greek refugee, received from the pope the ancient church of Saint Boniface on the Aventine Hill, established a community of Greek monks there, and promoted the veneration of Alexius, whose relics the church thereafter claimed; the basilica is now known as Santi Bonifacio e Alessio. The feast of Saint Alexius is 17 July in the Latin Church; it stood in the General Roman Calendar until the reform of 1969, after which it was left to particular calendars. Eastern churches commemorate him on 17 March. He is honored as a patron of beggars, pilgrims, travellers, nurses, and belt-makers, and the Alexian Brothers derive their name from him.
