Biography

Short Description

Alexius U Se-yŏng is a name that follows a well-attested pattern in Korean Catholic history: a Korean surname and given name paired with a Western baptismal name. Alexius (Alexis) was used as a Christian name among Korean believers, and the romanization U Se-yŏng corresponds to a Korean personal name of the form 우세영. Beyond that onomastic profile and the existence of a corresponding catalogue entry, however, a full, independently corroborated life cannot be reconstructed from the standard historical and hagiographical sources available for verification. Precise dates of birth and death, places of origin and burial, family status, and any religious profession or ecclesiastical office remain unconfirmed and are therefore left unspecified.

Korean Catholicism took root in the late eighteenth century among Confucian literati who encountered Christian books from China, and it grew largely as a lay movement before the arrival of foreign clergy. Successive Joseon-dynasty persecutions—especially those associated with the opening of the nineteenth century, the late 1830s, and the mid-1860s—produced a large number of martyrs, many of them known only by a Korean name and a baptismal name. The Catholic Church later recognized groups of these victims, notably in the canonization of 103 martyrs in 1984 and in the beatification of Paul Yun Chi-chung and companions in 2014. Similar naming conventions appear throughout those lists, but a securely documented identification of this exact individual with a named martyr, confessor, or cleric in those groups cannot be established here without risk of error.

In the absence of a verifiable vita, it is not possible to state whether U Se-yŏng was a layman or a religious, whether he married or had children, or whether a cultus (feast, patronage, beatification, or canonization) was ever attached to his name. Claims of that kind would require matching this person to a specific entry in martyrologies, diocesan records, or the acts of the Korean persecutions. Those matches are not confirmed in the sources that can be checked for this account. The name itself indicates a male Christian of Korean background; it does not, by itself, supply a biography.

Accordingly this notice records only what can be said with caution: the subject is known as Alexius U Se-yŏng, is not among the Bishops of Rome or the patriarchs of the Eastern churches, and otherwise belongs to the large and only partly documented world of Korean Catholics whose individual stories were often preserved fragmentarily, if at all, after persecution, exile, or ordinary obscurity. Further detail would depend on primary Korean church records or a critical biographical study that has not been verified for the present purpose.
