Biography

Short Description

Alicja Kotowska was born Maria Jadwiga Kotowska on 20 November 1899 in Warsaw, then in the Russian-ruled Polish lands. She grew up in a Catholic Polish family during the last years of the partitions and the struggle for national independence. As a young woman she studied at the University of Warsaw, in the natural sciences, and is recorded as having taken part in auxiliary medical service during the Polish–Soviet War of 1920. In 1922 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Resurrection (Zgromadzenie Sióstr Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego), a Polish women’s institute devoted especially to education and Christian formation, and received the religious name Alicja. She made her life as a teaching sister rather than in a cloistered contemplative house, combining vows of religion with work in schools.

In the interwar Polish Republic she was assigned to educational work and, in 1934, became superior of the Resurrectionist convent in Wejherowo in Pomerania, where she also directed the sisters’ school for girls. Wejherowo lay in the Polish Corridor, a region of mixed population and intense German–Polish tension. Sister Alicja’s role placed her among the local Polish Catholic intelligentsia: religious superior, teacher, and head of a school that formed Polish girls in faith and national culture. That profile later made her a target when Nazi Germany set out to destroy Poland’s leadership class.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, Pomerania was annexed to the Reich and subjected to the Intelligenzaktion, a planned campaign of arrests and mass shootings aimed at priests, teachers, officials, and other Polish elites. Sister Alicja was arrested by the Gestapo in Wejherowo in late October 1939. On 11 November 1939 she was taken to the forests of Piaśnica near Wejherowo and shot, one of thousands of civilians murdered there in the Piaśnica massacres of 1939–40. Victims were buried in mass graves in the forest; during the later German occupation the perpetrators attempted to conceal the crime by exhuming and burning remains. Traditional accounts associated with her cult describe her going to death with religious composure, but the essential historical fact is her execution as a Catholic religious and Polish educator in that massacre.

She was not canonized. Pope John Paul II beatified her in Warsaw on 13 June 1999 together with 107 other Polish victims of the Second World War, the group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their common liturgical commemoration in the Catholic Church is 12 June. Alicja Kotowska is venerated as a martyr of the faith under Nazi occupation, remembered especially in Pomerania and among the Resurrectionist Sisters as a religious who died for remaining at her post as superior and teacher when the occupying power moved against the Church and the Polish nation.
