Biography

Short Description

Alix Le Clerc was born on 2 February 1576 in Remiremont, a town in the Duchy of Lorraine then lying within the Holy Roman Empire. She belonged to a comfortable bourgeois family; her father, Jean Le Clerc, was a man of local standing. In adolescence and early adulthood she took part in the social life of her class, including dances and fashionable gatherings, in a region that remained firmly Catholic under the dukes of Lorraine even as neighboring lands were shaken by the Reformation. Toward the end of the 1590s she underwent a marked conversion of life, turning from worldly amusements toward prayer and a desire for consecrated service. Accounts of her vocation emphasize interior graces and a growing conviction that she was called to a new form of religious life rather than to an existing enclosed monastery.

She placed herself under the guidance of Peter Fourier, a Canon Regular of Saint Augustine and parish priest of Mattaincourt, who had conceived the project of a community of women devoted to the free education of girls, especially the poor. Such schooling was uncommon in late sixteenth-century Lorraine, where girls of modest means seldom received formal instruction. Alix and a handful of companions began a common life of prayer and teaching in the last years of the sixteenth century. Early efforts were associated with Poussay, near her native Remiremont, and then with Mattaincourt. The institute adopted the Rule of Saint Augustine and became known as the Congregation of Our Lady (Congrégation Notre-Dame). The sisters united a regular, quasi-monastic observance with an active apostolate in the classroom, a combination that required patience in obtaining episcopal support and, in due course, wider ecclesiastical recognition.

As the congregation took root, Alix Le Clerc helped to form the first sisters and to open additional houses in Lorraine during the early seventeenth century, despite the insecurity caused by regional warfare and political tension between the duchy and neighboring powers. She was remembered for humility, for an insistence that poor girls should not be excluded from instruction, and for close collaboration with Fourier, who outlived her and continued to support and organize the institute. The work spread to several towns in Lorraine. In her later years she resided at the community established in Nancy, the ducal capital, which became an important center for the congregation.

Alix Le Clerc died in Nancy on 9 January 1622. A cultus developed within her congregation and among those educated by the sisters. The cause of beatification advanced in the twentieth century, and she was beatified by Pope Pius XII on 4 May 1947. She has not been canonized and is therefore invoked as Blessed Alix Le Clerc. Her liturgical commemoration is kept on 9 January, the anniversary of her death. The Congregation of Our Lady continued after her death, later spread beyond Lorraine, and has remained dedicated to the education of young women in the spirit of its founders.
