Biography

Short Description

Alojzy Liguda was born on 23 January 1898 in the village of Winów, near Opole in Upper Silesia, then part of the German Empire. He grew up in a Catholic family in a borderland of Polish and German language and culture. Drawn to missionary priesthood, he entered the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini), the congregation founded by Saint Arnold Janssen. He completed religious formation and theological studies in the Society and was ordained a priest in the 1920s.

As a Divine Word Missionary he worked in education and pastoral ministry in Poland. He taught and later served as rector of the Society’s secondary school and formation house at Górna Grupa in northern Poland. Contemporaries remembered him as a capable teacher, preacher, and spiritual writer who published works of religious instruction. His public ministry belonged to the interwar Polish Republic, where the SVD maintained houses for the education of youth and the training of missionaries.

After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, religious involved in education were targeted by the occupation authorities. Liguda was arrested by the Gestapo with other Divine Word Missionaries from Górna Grupa. He was held in successive prisons and camps, including Stutthof and Sachsenhausen, and was then sent to the Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria, where the regime confined large numbers of Polish clergy in a priests’ barracks.

At Dachau he suffered the hunger, forced labor, and violence inflicted on prisoner-priests, and is remembered for sustaining fellow inmates through prayer and priestly solidarity so far as camp conditions allowed. He died there on 8 December 1942. Some survivor testimonies describe a deliberate killing by camp personnel, including an account of drowning; other notices record only that he died amid the lethal conditions of the camp. His remains were not recovered for Christian burial, as was usual for Dachau victims.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution, honored collectively as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their liturgical commemoration is kept on 12 June. Liguda is venerated in the Catholic Church as a blessed martyr of the Society of the Divine Word.
