Biography

Short Description

Alonso de Orozco Mena was born in 1500 in Oropesa, in the province of Toledo in Castile, to Juan de Orozco and María de Mena. His father held administrative posts for the Crown, and the family’s duties took them to several towns of New Castile, so that Alonso spent parts of his childhood in Talavera de la Reina and later in Madrid. He received a humanist and ecclesiastical education and went on to the University of Salamanca, then among the leading universities in Europe. While a student there he was deeply impressed by the preaching and example of the Augustinian friar Thomas of Villanova, later archbishop of Valencia, and that encounter oriented him toward religious life.

In 1522 he entered the Order of Saint Augustine at the Salamanca house of the order. After novitiate, profession, and theological studies he was ordained a priest. He served in various Augustinian communities in Spain and became known as a preacher of unusual force. In the mid-sixteenth century he was named preacher to the royal court, a charge he held under Emperor Charles V and then under Philip II, accompanying the court between Valladolid, Madrid, and other residences. Although he lived close to power, contemporary witnesses stressed his personal austerity, long hours of prayer, and care for the poor, prisoners, and the sick. He was sought as a confessor and spiritual director by members of the court as well as by ordinary people.

Orozco wrote a large body of spiritual works in Spanish, including treatises on prayer, the Passion of Christ, devotion to the Virgin Mary, and the Christian life, as well as sermons and a rule of life. These books were printed repeatedly in the later sixteenth century and helped shape Catholic devotion in Spain in the age of the Council of Trent. He also promoted reform within his order and took part in the foundation of several convents of Augustinian friars and nuns. Hagiographical sources attribute to him mystical experiences, including visions, while equally emphasizing his obedience, humility, and practical charity. He remained active in preaching and writing into old age.

He died in Madrid on 19 September 1591. Veneration of him as a holy man began at once in the Augustinian order and in Madrid. The Holy See later confirmed his cult; he was beatified by Pope Clement XII in 1732 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 May 2002. His liturgical feast is kept on 19 September. He is remembered as a sixteenth-century Spanish Augustinian who combined the roles of court preacher, spiritual writer, and pastor in the world of the Spanish Habsburg court.
