Biography

Short Description

Alonso de Barzana, whose name also appears in historical sources as Alonzo de Barcena and Alonso de Bárcena, was a Spanish Jesuit priest, missionary, and linguist of the sixteenth century. He was born in the town of Belinchón in the province of Cuenca, in Castile. Surviving accounts do not agree on a single year of birth; the dates 1528 and 1530 are both found in standard biographical compilations. He received his education at the University of Alcalá de Henares and was ordained a priest in the secular clergy. Already a mature man, he entered the Society of Jesus in Spain in the mid-1560s.

In 1569 he sailed to Peru with one of the early Jesuit groups assigned to the Andes, shortly after the Society had established itself in Lima in 1568. He taught theology for a time at the Jesuit college in Lima, then left academic duties for full-time missionary work among indigenous peoples. For more than twenty years he travelled widely: in the highlands of Peru, at the important Jesuit residence of Juli on Lake Titicaca among the Aymara, through the Collao and the Audiencia of Charcas, and southward into the province of Tucumán and neighbouring districts of the Gran Chaco frontier, regions that today lie in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay. There he preached to Quechua, Aymara, Diaguita, and other native communities, often on foot and under conditions of notable personal austerity.

Barzana’s reputation among his contemporaries rested especially on his command of indigenous languages. He is credited with learning a large number of Andean and lowland tongues, including Quechua, Aymara, and Puquina, and with composing grammars, vocabularies, catechisms, and books of Christian doctrine in those languages. Most of these writings remained unpublished and have been lost; enough is attested in Jesuit catalogues and later references to rank him among the foremost linguist-missionaries of colonial South America. He is associated with the pastoral and translational labour that accompanied the Third Council of Lima in the early 1580s, which sought to provide authorized catechetical texts in Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara for the viceroyalty.

In his final years he resided at Cuzco, where he died on 31 January 1598. He was never beatified or canonized and has no feast day in the general Roman calendar. Jesuit and colonial historiography nevertheless remembers him as a central figure in the early Andean missions, distinguished by linguistic skill, itinerant preaching, and a life of poverty and penance rather than by high office.
