Biography

Short Description

Aloysius Schwartz was born on 18 September 1930 in Washington, D.C., in the United States. He discerned a vocation to the priesthood and to missionary service among the poor while still young. His theological studies included a period at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. There he encountered the shrine and message of Our Lady of Banneux, known as the Virgin of the Poor, which shaped his later apostolate. He was ordained a priest of the Catholic Church in 1957 and left the same year for South Korea, a country then marked by the destruction and social dislocation that followed the Korean War.

In Korea he worked among orphans, street children, and destitute families, especially in and around Busan. In 1964 he founded the Sisters of Mary, a congregation of religious women committed to a life of poverty and to the care and education of abandoned and extremely poor children. The sisters staffed residential schools commonly called Boystowns and Girlstowns, which combined boarding, academic instruction, and vocational training. In 1981 he established a parallel community of men, the Brothers of Christ, to share the same mission. His foundations grew into a network of large children's villages intended to raise children from destitution to self-supporting adulthood. He himself remained a diocesan priest rather than a member of a traditional religious order.

International recognition followed the expansion of this work. In 1983 he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding. In the mid-1980s, at the invitation of Church authorities in the Philippines, he opened similar villages there; work later extended to Mexico as well. Fundraising and support organizations, including what became known as World Villages for Children, helped sustain the schools. Throughout, Schwartz insisted that the children in his care were not objects of pity but persons to be formed in dignity, faith, and practical skills.

In 1989 he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a progressive motor neuron disease. He continued to govern and visit his communities as his physical condition declined, eventually becoming almost completely paralyzed. He died on 16 March 1992 in the Philippines. A cause for his canonization was introduced in the Catholic Church; on 22 January 2015 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing his heroic virtues, by which he received the title Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day or official patronages have been assigned to him.
