Biography

Short Description

Alpaïs of Cudot was a French recluse and mystic of the later twelfth century, born into a poor peasant family in the village of Cudot in the diocese of Sens, in what is now the Yonne department. The exact year of her birth is not securely recorded; later tradition places it around the middle of the twelfth century. Little can be verified about her childhood beyond her humble rural origins and the hard labour expected of a peasant girl. As a young unmarried woman she was stricken with a severe, disfiguring illness, described in contemporary hagiographical accounts as leprosy, which left her paralyzed and confined to her bed. Family hardship followed, since she could no longer work in the fields. During this period of suffering she underwent a deepening of religious devotion that shaped the rest of her life.

According to her medieval vita, Alpaïs experienced visions of the Virgin Mary, who is said to have healed her of leprosy while leaving her otherwise infirm and unable to take ordinary food. Thereafter she was reputed to have lived for many years sustained only by the Eucharist, a claim of prolonged inedia that drew both popular veneration and official scrutiny. Guillaume aux Blanches Mains, Archbishop of Sens, investigated the phenomenon, arranging tests involving the consecrated host and ultimately giving a measure of ecclesiastical approval to her way of life. She was enclosed as a recluse in a cell adjoining the parish church of Cudot, where she received visitors who sought counsel and prayer. The principal narrative of her life was composed in Cistercian circles, and monks of the nearby abbey of Les Écharlis provided spiritual direction. She is therefore associated with the Cistercian order, although she lived as a village anchoress rather than as a nun in a convent.

Her reputation spread through the region of Sens and beyond. Tradition holds that King Philip II Augustus of France visited her and consulted her, placing her among the more prominent female religious figures of late twelfth-century France. The sources for her life remain limited chiefly to hagiographical narratives and the records of episcopal inquiry; miraculous claims associated with her, including the long fast and visionary experiences, must be read in that context. She belongs to a wider pattern of eucharistic mysticism and enclosed female holiness that developed in Western Europe in this period, and later writers on wonders and holy women took notice of her case.

Alpaïs died on 3 November 1211 in her recluse’s cell at Cudot and was buried in the parish church, which became a local pilgrimage site, later associated with a spring. Devotion to her continued in the diocese of Sens and among Cistercians. In 1874 Pope Pius IX confirmed her cultus, and she is venerated as Blessed Alpaïs, with a liturgical feast on 3 November. She has no widely established list of patronages in the manner of more prominent saints, though local memory in Cudot has preserved her tomb and the church that housed her cell.
