Biography

Short Description

Alphaeus is a figure named in the New Testament as the father of James, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. The Synoptic Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles include James son of Alphaeus in their lists of the Twelve, distinguishing him from James the son of Zebedee. The Greek form of the name, Alphaios, is generally taken to represent an Aramaic or Hebrew name such as Halphai or Halfai. Beyond this patronymic, the canonical texts give no further narrative about Alphaeus himself: he does not appear as a speaking or acting character in any Gospel scene, and no independent biography of him survives from the first centuries of Christianity.

A second New Testament reference names Alphaeus as the father of Levi, the tax collector whom Jesus called from the custom house, according to the Gospel of Mark. Levi is widely identified with Matthew the Evangelist and Apostle. Christian readers have long asked whether James and Matthew therefore shared the same father. Some traditions treat them as brothers. Many modern commentators, however, regard the coincidence of the name as insufficient proof, noting that the New Testament never describes James and Matthew as brothers, in contrast to its explicit pairing of other apostolic siblings such as Peter and Andrew or the sons of Zebedee. On that view there were two distinct men named Alphaeus in the circle of Jesus's earliest followers, and the name itself was not rare.

Later ecclesiastical tradition frequently identified Alphaeus with Clopas (also spelled Cleophas or Cleopas), mentioned in the Gospel of John as the husband of Mary of Clopas, one of the women present at the crucifixion. The identification depends on the possibility that Alphaeus and Clopas are variant Greek transcriptions of the same Semitic name. If accepted, it would make Alphaeus the husband of that Mary and the father of James the Less and of Joses, and it has sometimes been extended to include Simon and Jude among his sons, in connection with debates over the so-called brothers of Jesus. Church Fathers such as Jerome employed this cluster of identifications in arguing that those brothers were cousins rather than uterine siblings of Jesus. The reconstruction remains conjectural; it is not demonstrated by the New Testament itself and is treated with caution by contemporary historical scholarship.

No reliable source records Alphaeus's dates of birth or death, his place of origin, his occupation, or his burial. He is reasonably placed in Galilee or elsewhere in Roman Palestine in the early first century, because his son or sons belonged to Jesus's Galilean following. He was not a pope, patriarch, or member of a later religious order, and he is not known to have been the object of an independent, universally observed feast or of formal canonization in the later juridical sense. Memory of him survives almost entirely through the apostolic lists and through subsequent attempts of Christian interpreters to map the kinship networks around Jesus.
