Biography

Short Description

Alphius, Philadelphus and Cyrinus (Italian: Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino) are three brothers venerated as Christian martyrs, above all in eastern Sicily. According to their traditional Passio they were born at Vaste (ancient Basta) in the Salento peninsula of Apulia, to a family of local standing; the legend names their father Vitalis. The same accounts present them as still youths—often given as about twenty-one, twenty and nineteen years of age—when they were arrested for refusing to sacrifice during the persecution associated with the emperor Decius in the mid-third century. Independent confirmation of their existence as a precise trio of brothers does not survive outside the hagiographical narrative, but an ancient cult of martyrs at Lentini is well attested and was already established in the Sicilian church long before the later Middle Ages.

The legend relates that after interrogation on the Italian mainland they were conveyed to Sicily. At Leontini (modern Lentini) they were brought before a local official, commonly named Tertullus in the texts, and subjected to a succession of tortures. Traditional versions assign particular sufferings to each brother: Alphius is said to have had his tongue torn out, Philadelphus to have been roasted on a gridiron, and Cyrinus to have been plunged into boiling oil or otherwise put to death. The date assigned by the Acts and repeated by later martyrologies is 10 May 251. A Christian woman of Lentini is credited in the story with recovering and burying their bodies, which thereafter became the focus of local veneration.

Devotion to the three brothers took deep root in Sicily. Lentini claimed their tombs and later their principal relics; a church dedicated to them, associated with the town’s cathedral, remained the centre of the cult. In the later Middle Ages and early modern period relics or reputedly authentic remains were also honoured at Trecastagni on the southern slopes of Mount Etna, and the nearby settlement of Sant’Alfio took its name from the eldest brother. The three saints are patrons of Lentini, Trecastagni and Sant’Alfio. Their feast on 10 May is marked in those towns by processions of statues and relics and by civic celebration, and they have also been invoked for protection against eruptions of Etna and other calamities of eastern Sicily.

Modern hagiographical criticism treats the Passio as a late and largely legendary composition, typical of Sicilian martyr acts that elaborate a genuine local cult with conventional scenes of interrogation, torture and burial. The Roman Martyrology nevertheless retains their commemoration on 10 May, describing them as martyrs of Lentini. No reliable evidence survives for a formal papal canonization or beatification; their sainthood belongs to the ancient, pre-congregational cultus of the Sicilian church. Nothing historically certain is known of marriage or offspring; the legend presents them as unmarried youths, and they are not associated with any religious order.
