Biography

Short Description

Alphonsus Mary de' Liguori was born on 27 September 1696 at Marianella, near Naples, in the Kingdom of Naples, the eldest child of Giuseppe de' Liguori, a captain of the royal galleys, and Anna Maria Cavalieri. He belonged to a devout noble family and received a careful education in the humanities, music, and the law. At the age of sixteen he took doctorates in civil and canon law at the University of Naples and entered the Neapolitan bar, where he practiced with notable success for about eight years. A humiliating defeat in an important case, caused by his failure to notice a decisive document, together with a deepening religious conversion, led him to abandon the legal profession. After a period of prayer, works of charity among the poor and the sick of Naples, and resistance from his father, who had hoped for a brilliant secular career, he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Naples on 21 December 1726.

As a young priest he gave himself to popular missions and to the care of the abandoned poor, especially in the slums of Naples and in neglected rural districts. On 9 November 1732, at Scala on the Amalfi coast, he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, whose members, later called Redemptorists, were to live in community and to preach missions among the most spiritually neglected, particularly in the countryside. The institute's early decades were marked by extreme poverty, internal tensions, and opposition from both civil and ecclesiastical authorities. Alphonsus remained a tireless missionary preacher even as he governed the new congregation and composed the spiritual and theological works that would make his name. He sought a pastoral middle way in moral theology between Jansenist rigorism and laxism, a position later associated with equiprobabilism, and he wrote extensively on devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Eucharist, and the love of Jesus Christ.

In 1762, against his own inclination, he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti. He accepted the office under obedience and undertook a thorough reform of the small diocese, visiting parishes, correcting clerical abuses, promoting catechesis, and relieving the poor. Chronic illness, above all severe rheumatoid arthritis that eventually deformed his body and forced his head down onto his chest, compelled him to resign the see in 1775. He retired to the Redemptorist house at Pagani. There he continued to write and to suffer. A particularly bitter trial came when a version of the congregation's rule, altered to meet the demands of the Neapolitan court, was approved in circumstances that left the aged, nearly blind founder misunderstood and, for a time, canonically excluded from the very institute he had established. He also endured periods of spiritual desolation and scrupulosity.

Alphonsus died at Pagani on 1 August 1787, in his ninety-first year. He was beatified by Pope Pius VII on 15 September 1816 and canonized by Pope Gregory XVI on 26 May 1839. Pope Pius IX declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1871, and Pope Pius XII named him patron of confessors and of moral theologians in 1950. His relics are enshrined in the basilica dedicated to him at Pagani. His feast is observed on 1 August. Through his moral theology, his missionary method, and spiritual writings such as The Glories of Mary and The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, he exercised a lasting influence on Catholic pastoral practice, popular devotion, and the formation of confessors.
