Biography

Short Description

Altfrid (also rendered Altfried) was bishop of Hildesheim from 851 until his death in 874 and a leading ecclesiastical and political figure in the East Frankish kingdom during the middle decades of the ninth century. He was of Saxon noble origin and belonged to a family that stood in close kinship with the Liudolfings, the lineage that later produced the Ottonian kings and emperors. A kinswoman of his, Gerswid, became the first abbess of the women’s community he established at Essen. Contemporary sources do not record his date or place of birth, nor do they preserve a detailed account of his education or early career before he entered the higher clergy.

In 851 Altfrid was appointed bishop of Hildesheim, a Saxon see founded in the early ninth century in the wake of Charlemagne’s conquest and conversion of the Saxons. As bishop he worked to consolidate church life in a region still relatively recently incorporated into the Frankish Christian order. He appears in the surviving record as a counsellor of King Louis the German, attending assemblies and synods and acting as a trusted member of the East Frankish episcopate. His episcopate coincided with the continuing organization of diocesan structures, the foundation of religious houses, and the integration of the Saxon aristocracy into the Carolingian church and kingdom.

Altfrid’s most enduring foundation was the community of canonesses at Essen, established around the middle of the ninth century on the Hellweg in the Ruhr region. He endowed the house and placed it under the leadership of his relative Gerswid. Essen Abbey grew into one of the foremost women’s collegiate foundations of the empire and, in the tenth and eleventh centuries, was closely associated with Ottonian and Salian royal women. He is also credited with the foundation of the abbey of Lamspringe in the diocese of Hildesheim. Through these houses, as well as through his activity as bishop, he contributed to the Christianization and ecclesiastical endowment of Saxony.

Altfrid died on 15 August 874. He was buried in the church of Essen Abbey, the community he had founded, and his tomb there became the centre of a local cult. He has been venerated as a saint especially in Essen and in the diocese of Hildesheim, with a feast day on 15 August. In the modern era he is honoured as patron of the city of Essen and of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Essen. No contemporary full-length biography survives; knowledge of his life depends on charters, brief annalistic notices, and the later tradition of the Essen community. Precise details of many episodes of his career therefore remain unknown, but his role as a Saxon noble bishop, royal counsellor, and monastic founder is firmly established in the history of ninth-century East Francia.
