Biography

Short Description

Altfried (also spelled Altfrid or Altfridus) was a ninth-century Saxon prelate who served as Bishop of Münster from 839 until his death in 849. He belonged to a noble Saxon family and was a kinsman of Saint Liudger, the missionary who had established the diocese of Münster and the monastery of Werden on the Ruhr. Virtually nothing is recorded about Altfried’s birth, childhood, or education. Like other members of the Saxon aristocracy who entered ecclesiastical life in the decades after Charlemagne’s conquest of Saxony, he almost certainly received his formation within the network of monasteries and churches founded by Liudger and his relatives.

In 839 Altfried succeeded Gerfried, another kinsman of Liudger, as bishop of Münster. The diocese was still in the process of being organized; its territory covered much of what is now Westphalia, a region only recently converted and incorporated into the Frankish Church. As bishop, Altfried was responsible for continuing the work of Christianization, establishing pastoral structures, and maintaining the close relationship between the episcopal see and the abbey of Werden, which remained the spiritual heart of Liudger’s foundations. He also held the office of abbot of Werden, thereby combining episcopal and monastic authority in the tradition of his predecessors.

Altfried’s principal lasting achievement is the Vita Sancti Liudgeri, a Latin life of Saint Liudger that he composed during his episcopate, probably in the 840s. Written at the request of the monks of Werden and based on the recollections of people who had known the saint, the Vita is the most important narrative source for Liudger’s career and for the early history of the Church in Frisia and Saxony. It presents Liudger as a model missionary, founder, and Benedictine abbot and thereby served both to honor the family saint and to instruct Altfried’s own contemporaries. The text survives in several medieval manuscripts and has been fundamental to all later reconstructions of Liudger’s life.

Altfried died on 22 April 849 after a decade as bishop. His death marked the end of the period in which the see of Münster and the abbey of Werden were governed by members of Liudger’s kin-group. He is not known to have been the object of a widespread liturgical cult, and no feast day or patronage is securely attached to his name. His historical significance rests on his role as a Carolingian bishop in newly converted Saxony and, above all, on his authorship of the Vita Liudgeri, which remains an essential document for the religious history of the ninth-century Lower Rhine and Westphalia.
