Biography

Short Description

Amata of Assisi was a thirteenth-century Italian nun of the community of Poor Ladies at San Damiano, the house established by Clare of Assisi just outside the walls of Assisi in Umbria. Later Franciscan tradition identifies her as a niece of Saint Clare and places her among the early companions who embraced the penitential life associated with Francis of Assisi and Clare. Hard contemporary evidence for her biography is limited. The acts of the canonization process for Clare, conducted at Assisi in 1253, include testimony from a Sister Amata, daughter of Martino of Assisi, who stated that she had already lived many years in the monastery. Historians have not been able to prove that this witness is the same person later commemorated as Blessed Amata, nor to reconstruct a reliable genealogy linking her to Clare's Offreduccio family. The figure known to later martyrologies is therefore as much a product of pious memory as of archival record.

Medieval and early modern hagiography relates that Amata passed her youth in worldly occupations and that Clare obtained her conversion by prayer. According to these accounts, the young woman then took the habit at San Damiano and lived thereafter in enclosure, poverty, and penitence. Such conversion stories were a familiar motif in the legends of Clare's circle, intended to illustrate the saint's spiritual influence over her own kin and over the urban elite of Assisi. They cannot be verified in their narrative details. What is historically secure is the character of the San Damiano community in the first half of the thirteenth century: a small, strictly enclosed sisterhood living by manual work and the Divine Office, dependent on the Friars Minor for pastoral care, and committed to the radical poverty that Clare defended in her correspondence with popes and in the Rule she obtained shortly before her death in 1253.

Traditional notices assign Amata's death to the year 1250 at Assisi. That date is widely repeated in modern calendars of saints, yet it sits uneasily with the 1253 deposition if the two women named Amata are identical, and no independent necrology or tomb inscription confirms it. Burial at San Damiano would have been the normal practice for a sister of the house, but no shrine or translation is documented. Devotion to Amata remained largely confined to the Franciscan family. She is customarily styled Blessed; no papal bull of canonization or a securely identified act of beatification has been established in the standard historical literature, and her cult appears to rest on long-standing liturgical commemoration rather than on a formal modern process. Franciscan calendars assign her feast to 20 February. She is not credited with a defined list of patronages.

Despite the thinness of the dossier, Amata's name preserves the memory of the first generation of Poor Clares, women who left the noble and mercantile families of central Italy to share Clare's experiment in evangelical poverty. Whether or not every legendary episode can be trusted, the veneration of Amata testifies to the way Assisi's female Franciscan community remembered its early members as models of conversion and fidelity within the enclosed life of San Damiano.
