Biography

Short Description

Ambrogio Traversari, known in English as Ambrose Traversari or Ambrose of Camaldoli, was born on 16 September 1386 in the Apennine village of Portico di Romagna in Romagna (now in Emilia-Romagna, Italy). In 1400, at about the age of fourteen, he entered the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. The Camaldolese, a reformed Benedictine congregation founded by Saint Romuald, combined eremitical and cenobitic observance. Traversari distinguished himself by piety, discipline, and unusual linguistic ability. He attained a high command of Latin and, rare among Latin monks of the early fifteenth century, a working mastery of Greek, acquired through study of manuscripts and contact with Byzantine scholars then present in Florence.

In the first decades of the fifteenth century he became one of the principal Christian humanists of the Italian Renaissance. He translated into Latin a substantial body of Greek patristic, theological, and hagiographical literature that had been little known in the West, including works attributed to Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, sermons and treatises of Saint John Chrysostom, writings of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, texts of Saint Ephrem, and monastic lives such as Palladius’s Life of Chrysostom. These versions circulated among scholars and churchmen and helped reintroduce Eastern Christian sources to Latin readers. Traversari maintained a large correspondence with leading humanists and patrons, among them Cosimo de’ Medici, Niccolò Niccoli, Leonardo Bruni, Poggio Bracciolini, and Francesco Filelfo. The surviving letters document both his philological work and his concern for monastic reform and the spiritual life.

In 1431 he was elected Prior General of the Camaldolese Order, an office he held until his death. He conducted visitations, sought to restore regular observance, and attempted to ease tensions between the eremitical and cenobitic houses of the congregation. His learning and reputation drew him into the circle of Pope Eugene IV. When the council opened at Ferrara in 1438 (later transferred to Florence) to negotiate reunion of the Latin and Greek churches, Traversari served as a papal theologian and as an interpreter because of his Greek. He took part in discussions on the procession of the Holy Spirit, purgatory, and papal primacy, and he assisted in the preparation of the decree of union Laetentur Caeli, promulgated in Florence in 1439. The union did not endure in the East, but his role illustrates contemporary Latin hopes for reconciliation and the practical value of Greek learning at the council.

Traversari died in Florence on 20 October 1439, only months after the proclamation of union in the cathedral. He was buried in the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the monastery that had been his home for nearly forty years. Within the Camaldolese Order he has long been venerated as Blessed Ambrose of Camaldoli; the congregation observes his memory on 20 November. He was not the subject of a formal post-Tridentine papal canonization, and he does not have an obligatory feast in the general Roman Martyrology. His letters, translations, and a small number of original writings remain important sources for early Renaissance humanism, Camaldolese history, and the Council of Florence. Historians regard him as a figure who joined monastic spirituality, patristic scholarship, and the new philological methods of the quattrocento.
