Biography

Short Description

Ambrósio Fernandes was a Portuguese Jesuit lay brother and martyr of the Japan mission in the early seventeenth century. He was born in 1551 in Portugal; later hagiographical notices do not agree on a precise town, and the surviving record of his childhood is thin. As a young man he went out to Portuguese India, apparently in a secular capacity. At Goa in 1571 he entered the Society of Jesus as a temporal coadjutor, taking the vows of a brother rather than seeking ordination. He was then assigned to the Jesuit mission in Japan and reached the country in the later 1570s, remaining there for roughly four decades.

His work in Japan belonged to the supporting life of the mission rather than to the pulpit. He assisted priests and the Christian communities of Kyushu through the years when the Church there still enjoyed a measure of growth and through the reversal that followed the Tokugawa turn against Christianity. After the expulsion edicts of the 1610s, many missionaries were forced to leave. Fernandes stayed, continuing to aid remaining Christians under increasingly clandestine and dangerous conditions.

He was arrested in 1618 and confined in the prison at Suzuta in the Ōmura domain. The regime of that prison was severe: hunger, cold, and prolonged deprivation. After more than a year of captivity he died there on 7 January 1620, about sixty-nine years of age, from the effects of starvation and hardship rather than from a public execution.

On 7 May 1867 Pope Pius IX beatified him together with two hundred and four other Christians who had died for the faith in Japan between 1617 and 1632, a group known as the 205 Martyrs of Japan. Fernandes has not been canonized and remains Blessed. Documentation of his personal life is limited, as is common for a lay brother of that period; what can be stated with confidence rests on Jesuit catalogues, the acts of the Japanese persecution, and the 1867 decree of beatification.
