Biography

Short Description

Ambrosius of Georgia, born Besarion Khelaia on 7 September 1861 in Martvili in the Samegrelo region of western Georgia, then in the Kutais Governorate of the Russian Empire, was a Georgian Orthodox hierarch, church historian, and national figure who served as Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia from 1921 until his death. He was trained at the Tbilisi Theological Seminary and at the Kazan Theological Academy, where he studied theology and church history and developed a lasting scholarly interest in the medieval Georgian Church and in the historical and canonical basis of Georgian autocephaly, which the Russian imperial state had suppressed after the annexation of Georgia in the early nineteenth century. Returning to Georgia, he served as a clergyman and teacher and later took monastic vows under the name Ambrosius. He wrote on Georgian ecclesiastical history and became associated with those who sought restoration of an independent Georgian Orthodox Church.

In the last decades of imperial rule he was drawn into the Georgian autocephalist movement and into related cultural and national activity. The Russian exarchate that administered the church in Georgia was widely resented, and clergy who advocated autocephaly faced surveillance and punishment; Ambrosius himself experienced arrest and periods of restriction. After the collapse of the imperial regime in 1917, a council of the Georgian Church proclaimed the restoration of autocephaly. Ambrosius was among the bishops of the restored church and held metropolitan responsibilities in western Georgia, including association with the historic see of Chqondidi and with Abkhazia. In February 1921 the Red Army invaded the short-lived Democratic Republic of Georgia. Catholicos-Patriarch Leonid died in the summer of 1921, and later that year Ambrosius was elected Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, taking office as the church came under severe pressure from the new Soviet authorities.

His patriarchate was dominated by confrontation between the Georgian Church and the Soviet state. Churches were closed, property was seized, and clergy were harassed. In 1922 he sent a memorandum to the Genoa Conference describing the occupation of Georgia and the persecution of the church and appealing to foreign governments. Soviet security organs treated the memorandum as a political crime. Ambrosius was arrested in 1923. In March 1924 he and other Georgian clerics were tried in Tbilisi in a public proceeding. He used the courtroom to defend Georgian autocephaly, to deny charges of conspiracy, and to protest the treatment of clergy and believers. He was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment.

Imprisonment and the hardships of the mid-1920s undermined his health. He was released before completing his sentence but remained in a precarious position under Soviet control. He died in Tbilisi on 29 March 1927. For decades Georgian believers remembered him as a patriarch who had refused to collaborate in the destruction of the church. After the later revival of ecclesiastical life, the Georgian Orthodox Church canonized him in 1995 as a confessor of the faith. He is remembered as a scholar of Georgian Christianity and as the hierarch who led the church during the first violent years of Soviet rule in Georgia.
