Biography

Short Description

Amphian (also known as Amphianus, Apphianus, or Appian) was a Christian martyr of the early fourth century whose life and death are known almost entirely from the contemporary account of Eusebius of Caesarea in his work on the Martyrs of Palestine. He was born into a wealthy and distinguished pagan family in Lycia, in southwestern Asia Minor. As a young man he received a literary and legal education at the celebrated school of Berytus (modern Beirut). Contrary to the expectations of his family, he converted to Christianity and declined to return home to the pagan household and civic career that awaited him. Instead he went to Caesarea in Palestine, then a major center of Christian scholarship.

In Caesarea he joined the household and scholarly circle of the presbyter Pamphilus, with whom Eusebius himself lived and worked. Eusebius, who knew Amphian personally, describes him as a youth who had not yet completed his twentieth year, serious in character and devoted to the study of Scripture and to a life of prayer and self-discipline. This period fell during the Great Persecution that began under Diocletian and continued in the East under Maximinus Daia. Public sacrifice was enforced by the imperial authorities, and Christians who refused faced imprisonment, torture, and execution.

Amphian’s martyrdom followed a public act of protest. When the Roman governor Urbanus was offering sacrifice, the young man approached him, seized his hand, and exhorted him to abandon the worship of idols and to acknowledge the one God. He was immediately arrested. Eusebius records a succession of severe tortures: scourging, the laceration of his sides, and the wrapping of his feet in linen soaked with oil which was then set alight, burning the flesh through to the bone. Amphian refused to recant. A stone was finally tied to him and he was thrown into the sea off Caesarea. Eusebius states that an earthquake followed and that the sea cast the body back onto the shore before the city gates, where Christians recovered it and gave it burial.

The traditional date of the martyrdom is 2 April 306. Amphian’s brother Aedesius, who had likewise studied and converted, was later martyred in Alexandria after protesting the abuse of imprisoned Christian virgins. Amphian has been venerated as a saint in both East and West; the Roman Martyrology commemorates him at Caesarea in Palestine on 2 April. Later martyrologies and synaxaria depend on Eusebius. No independent contemporary documents survive, and nothing further can be verified about his family, the exact Lycia locality of his birth, or any patronage subsequently attached to his name.
