Biography

Short Description

Saint Amphibalus is known from medieval English hagiography as the Christian priest who converted Saint Alban, Britain’s protomartyr, and who was himself later honoured as a martyr. The earliest narratives of Alban’s passion do not name this priest. The British writer Gildas, in the sixth century, and the Northumbrian historian Bede, in the eighth, both recount that Alban sheltered a fleeing cleric, received instruction in the Christian faith, and then put on the priest’s cloak in order to take his place before the Roman authorities. Neither Gildas nor Bede supplies a personal name, nor do they describe the subsequent fate of the priest after Alban’s execution. The historical setting of Alban’s death itself remains uncertain: later tradition placed it in the Diocletianic persecution of the early fourth century, while some modern scholars have argued for an earlier date in the third century. No contemporary Roman source mentions either Alban or his teacher.

The name Amphibalus emerges only in the twelfth century. It is used by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae and, more fully, in the hagiographical works associated with the Benedictine abbey of St Albans, including a passio attributed to William of St Albans. Philologists and historians have repeatedly noted that the Latin word amphibalus means a cloak or mantle, the very garment that figures so prominently in the older Alban legend. The prevailing scholarly view is therefore that the name originated as a misunderstanding or personification of that cloak rather than as the transmitted name of a real individual. Once the name had been coined, monastic writers at St Albans elaborated a complete biography that linked the priest to their own house and neighbourhood.

In the developed legend, Amphibalus is presented as a priest of Caerleon in south-east Wales who fled eastward during a persecution of Christians and found hospitality in Verulamium, the Roman city later called St Albans. There he converted his host, Alban. After Alban’s arrest and martyrdom, Amphibalus escaped, preached with great success, and converted many. He was eventually betrayed, captured, and brought back toward Verulamium. At Redbourn, a few miles from the later abbey, he was tortured and put to death together with a host of companion martyrs, whose numbers in later texts are given in obviously symbolic or inflated totals. None of these episodes, including the identification of Redbourn as the place of death, can be traced before the twelfth century, and they are not corroborated by independent historical evidence.

The cult of Amphibalus was given a concrete focus in 1178, when the monks of St Albans announced that they had discovered his relics and those of his companions at Redbourn. The bones were solemnly translated to the abbey church, a shrine was constructed, and a feast was instituted, customarily kept on 25 June, shortly after Saint Alban’s day on 22 June. The shrine drew pilgrims through the later Middle Ages until it was destroyed at the Reformation. Amphibalus continued to appear in some liturgical calendars of the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, but he is now generally regarded by historians as a legendary figure generated by the Alban tradition and by the interests of a great Benedictine monastery. No reliable source records his year of birth, his family, or a verifiable year of death; even his existence as a named martyr distinct from the anonymous priest of the early Alban passio remains unproven.
