Biography

Short Description

Amphion was a Christian bishop of the early fourth century, known from conciliar lists, the testimony of Athanasius of Alexandria, and later martyrological tradition. He is associated principally with the see of Epiphania in Cilicia Secunda, a city of southern Asia Minor in the Roman East. He belongs to the generation of churchmen who lived through the last imperial persecutions of the Christians and the settlement that followed Constantine’s rise, and who then took part in the doctrinal conflict opened by Arius. Nothing reliable is recorded of his family, birthplace, education, or the date of his birth. The notices that survive concern his public standing as a confessor and as an orthodox bishop rather than the private course of his life.

He is described as a confessor in the eastern persecutions of the early fourth century. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 12 June at Nicomedia as a bishop of distinguished virtue who was sent into exile in the persecution associated with Galerius Maximian and who ended his life in banishment. Other ecclesiastical writers connect a bishop Amphion of Epiphania with the measures of Maximinus Daia in the eastern provinces. In either case the tradition is that of a confessor rather than of a martyr put to death in the arena: he suffered imprisonment, exile, or related penalties and lived to hold episcopal office afterward. Whether the Cilician bishop of the Nicene lists and the Nicomedian confessor of the Martyrology are one man or two similarly named prelates is not settled with certainty in the sources. Later hagiography has often treated them as a single figure, sometimes suggesting a translation from Epiphania to Nicomedia after the First Council of Nicaea.

Amphion of Epiphania is firmly attested among the bishops who took part in the First Council of Nicaea in 325, the assembly that condemned Arius and issued the Nicene Creed. Athanasius of Alexandria, writing in the following decades against Arian and court-aligned bishops, named Amphion among prelates of proven holiness and orthodoxy and used his reputation as a standard of fidelity. That contemporary witness is the strongest evidence of how Amphion was regarded in his own lifetime. If he is identical with the Amphion whom some accounts place on the see of Nicomedia after the temporary deposition of Eusebius of Nicomedia, he would briefly have occupied one of the most politically sensitive bishoprics in the empire before Eusebius was restored. Nicomedia was an imperial residence in Bithynia; the appointment, if historical, would have been a mark of confidence by the Nicene party and a short-lived one.

Beyond these points the record is sparse. No sermons, letters, or theological works by Amphion are known to survive, and the years of his birth and death are not documented. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor patriarch or catholicos of an Eastern see, but a local bishop of the Greek-speaking East. The sources do not record a marriage, children, or membership in a later religious order. His cult is ancient and liturgical, of the kind that grew from local memory and martyrological entry rather than from a medieval papal canonization. The Roman Martyrology keeps his feast on 12 June, remembering him as a bishop of outstanding virtue who died in exile. He is not credited in the historical tradition with a developed list of patronages of places, trades, or causes. What can be said with confidence is that the fourth-century church counted him among the confessors of the last persecution and among the Nicene fathers, and that Athanasius held him up as a model of episcopal fidelity.
