Biography

Short Description

Ampliatus (rendered Amplias in some older English Bibles) is known historically from a single verse in the New Testament. In Romans 16:8 the Apostle Paul writes, “Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord.” The Epistle to the Romans is generally dated by scholars to the mid-50s of the first century, when Paul was in Corinth, and the long list of greetings in chapter 16 is addressed to Christians then living in Rome. The warmth of the phrase “my beloved in the Lord” implies that Paul knew Ampliatus personally and held him in affection, but the letter gives no further biographical detail: no origin, office, family, or fate is recorded. He therefore belongs to the small group of otherwise undocumented Roman Christians whose names survive only in Paul’s closing salutations.

The Latin name Ampliatus was common in first-century Rome among slaves and freedmen, especially those of the imperial household (the familia Caesaris). On that onomastic ground some modern commentators have suggested that Ampliatus may have been a slave or freedman connected with the court, a conjecture consistent with other New Testament hints that the gospel had reached Caesar’s household, but it remains unproven. In the Catacomb of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, nineteenth-century archaeologists, notably Giovanni Battista de Rossi, recorded a richly decorated cubiculum whose inscription AMPLIAT (or AMPLIATUS) occupies a prominent place. The quality of the decoration has been taken to indicate a person of standing in the early Roman church, and a link with the biblical Ampliatus has often been proposed; the identification, however, cannot be regarded as certain, and no ancient literary source confirms a burial there.

Later ecclesiastical tradition, especially in the East, numbered Ampliatus among the Seventy Apostles (or Seventy Disciples) of Luke 10. Lists attributed to Hippolytus of Rome and subsequent Orthodox synaxaria present him as bishop of Odyssus (Odessus; later Varna on the Black Sea), sometimes adding that he was ordained by the Apostle Andrew and that he died a martyr. Other strands of the same legendary material associate him instead with Diospolis (Lydda) in Palestine. These episcopal and martyrdom notices are hagiographical constructions of later centuries, which routinely assigned sees and passions to the obscure names of Romans 16; they are not independently documented. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Ampliatus on 31 October together with Urban and Narcissus, also named in that chapter. The Eastern Orthodox Church keeps the same date, often jointly with Stachys, Urban, Narcissus and Apelles, and remembers him again on 4 January at the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.

No reliable source records Ampliatus’s year or place of birth or death, his family, or any patronage. He was not Bishop of Rome, nor did he hold a patriarchal see. His cult is ancient and pre-congregational, without a recorded formal canonization or beatification. What can be said with historical caution is that a Christian named Ampliatus was known and loved by Paul in the Roman community of the 50s, that his name later attracted the usual overlay of apostolic and episcopal legend, and that both East and West have continued to honor him on 31 October as one of the earliest named members of the church in Rome.
