Biography

Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Anastasia of Sirmium, venerated in both East and West as a martyr of the Great Persecution, belongs to that class of early Christian saints whose cult is ancient and geographically wide, yet whose personal history is known almost entirely through later legend. Contemporary written evidence for her life does not survive. What can be said with reasonable confidence is that a martyr named Anastasia was honoured at Sirmium, the imperial city on the Sava in Pannonia (today Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia), and that her cult had reached Rome by the later fourth or early fifth century. Her name was inserted among the saints of the Communicantes in the Roman Canon, and a basilica on the lower Palatine, Santa Anastasia, became the stational church for the second, dawn Mass of Christmas. These liturgical facts, rather than any official acta, are the earliest anchors of her memory. The year of her death is traditionally given as 304, within the persecution launched by Diocletian and Galerius; the precise day is not independently attested.

The full biography that medieval and Byzantine readers knew is supplied by the Latin Passio Sanctae Anastasiae, a composite work of the fifth or sixth century that folds Anastasia into a cycle of related martyr stories, including those of Chrysogonus of Aquileia and of the three sisters Agape, Chionia, and Irene of Thessalonica. In this narrative she is a woman of the Roman senatorial class, daughter of a pagan father named Praetextatus and of a Christian mother, Fausta, who had her baptized and secretly instructed. She was married to a pagan husband, Publius, who is portrayed as harsh and opposed to her faith. During his lifetime she practised Christianity in concealment, using her wealth and her knowledge of remedies to visit prisoners, to bring them food and clothing, and to tend the sick among the confessors. From this charitable and medicinal work the Greek Church later styled her Pharmakolytria, the woman who delivers from potions and poisons.

After Publius died, the legend continues, Anastasia was free to act more openly. She is said to have gone north to Aquileia in connection with Chrysogonus, her spiritual teacher, and then into Pannonia. At Sirmium she was arrested, interrogated, and subjected to torture. Western retellings commonly state that she was burned alive; some Eastern versions speak of drowning in the sea or of a slower death by confinement and starvation. None of these details can be verified from fourth-century sources, and modern historians regard the Passio as a hagiographical romance that may preserve the name, the place of martyrdom, and a general association with care for the imprisoned, while inventing genealogy, marriage, travels, and the manner of death. The Roman Martyrology nevertheless commemorates her on 25 December, a date that reflects the Palatine basilica’s place in the Christmas stational liturgy. The churches of the Byzantine rite keep her feast on 22 December.

The subsequent history of her cult is better documented than her life. Relics attributed to her were translated from Sirmium to Constantinople, where a church of Saint Anastasia is attested in the capital’s religious topography. In the early ninth century remains claimed as hers were carried to Zadar on the Dalmatian coast; the cathedral of that city is dedicated to her and she is honoured as a principal patron. In Rome, Santa Anastasia al Palatino continued to mark her presence at the centre of papal liturgy throughout the Middle Ages. Devotion invoked her especially against poison, harmful drugs, and witchcraft, and she appears in Western patronage lists as a protector of weavers. She is not to be confused with Anastasia the Patrician, a sixth-century ascetic of Alexandria and the Thebaid, nor with every local martyr of the same name. The historical Anastasia of Sirmium remains, in the end, a figure whose enduring importance lies in the antiquity and breadth of her cult rather than in a recoverable personal biography.
