Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Anastasius of Suppentonia, also known as Anastasius of Castel Sant'Elia, was a sixth-century Italian monk and abbot whose historical footprint rests almost entirely on the testimony of Pope Gregory the Great. He governed a cenobitic community at Suppentonia, a site identified with the later settlement of Castel Sant'Elia in the territory of Nepi, in Tuscia north of Rome. Gregory, composing his Dialogues near the end of the sixth century, wrote that the holiness of Anastasius’s life was well known to him, which implies that the abbot’s reputation had already circulated among the clergy and monastic houses of central Italy. No contemporary source records Anastasius’s parentage, birthplace, or year of birth, and nothing reliable can be said about his childhood or the circumstances of his entry into monastic life.

Later Benedictine tradition has long numbered him among the early abbots of that observance, and he appears in Benedictine menologies as such. Gregory himself, however, does not state that the community at Suppentonia followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, whose diffusion in the Italian peninsula was still incomplete in the mid-sixth century. Anastasius is also associated in hagiographical tradition with Saint Nonnosus, the prior whose wonders Gregory recounts in the same Dialogues. Some accounts treat Anastasius as the abbot under whom Nonnosus served, whether at Monte Soratte or in the neighboring district; others simply call the two men companions in the monastic life of northern Latium. The two localities lie in the same general region, but the identification of every Anastasius named by Gregory as a single person remains a matter of later synthesis rather than of explicit sixth-century statement.

The episode that fixed Anastasius in memory is the account of a heavenly summons preserved by Gregory. A voice was heard from a height above the monastery, calling first the name of Anastasius and then the names of other monks in succession. Those who had been named died in the same order in which they had been called, within a short span of days. Gregory offered the story as an illustration of how the death of the just may be announced and of the unity of a monastic family in life and in death. It became the principal miracle attached to the saint in subsequent martyrologies and legendaries, and it is the only narrative incident about him that can be traced to a near-contemporary author.

Anastasius is conventionally held to have died about the year 570 at his monastery of Suppentonia and to have been buried there. The place remained the center of his cult; the later abbey and church of Sant’Elia at Castel Sant’Elia stand in that tradition. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 11 January as an abbot whose admirable life was described by Pope Saint Gregory the Great. His veneration is of the ancient, pre-congregational kind typical of local Italian monastic saints; no papal bull of canonization is known. He is distinct from other saints of the same name, including Anastasius the Persian, several popes called Anastasius, and Anastasius of Sinai. Beyond Gregory’s pages and the liturgical commemoration, the verifiable record is thin, and later elaborations should be treated with corresponding caution.
