Biography

Short Description

Saint Anastasius the Fuller, also called Anastasius of Aquileia or Anastasius of Salona, is an early Christian martyr commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 7 September. Traditional accounts place his death in 304, during the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian. He is described as a native of Aquileia, the important Roman city at the head of the Adriatic in what is now northeastern Italy, and as a fuller by trade—a craftsman who cleaned, scoured, and thickened woolen cloth. That occupation later supplied the epithet by which he is distinguished from other saints of the same name. No contemporary biography survives, and nothing reliable is known of his family, education, or early life beyond this local and occupational tradition.

According to the received legend, Anastasius left Aquileia and settled at Salona, capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, near present-day Solin and Split in Croatia, where he continued to work as a fuller. When imperial edicts against Christians were enforced in the region, he is said to have made an open profession of faith by painting or inscribing a cross on the door of his house or workshop. He was arrested, subjected to torture, and condemned to death by drowning. The conventional narrative states that a millstone was fastened about his neck and that he was cast into the water. These details belong to the common stock of late antique martyr stories and cannot be independently verified, but they have been repeated in martyrologies and local Dalmatian tradition since the early Middle Ages.

His cult took root both in northern Italy and on the Dalmatian coast. The Roman Martyrology associates the feast with Aquileia, while Salona and Split long honored him among their own martyrs, often alongside Saint Domnius, the principal patron of Split. Christians were said to have recovered his body after the drowning. In later centuries the relics were translated to Split (medieval Spalato). An early medieval sarcophagus associated with Saint Anastasius is preserved in the cathedral complex there, in the baptistery that occupies the former Temple of Jupiter, attesting to the endurance of his veneration on the Adriatic.

Historically, Anastasius remains an obscure figure. No authentic acta from the persecution itself have been preserved, and modern hagiographers treat the painted cross, the millstone, and the precise year 304 as pious tradition rather than documented fact. What can be said with caution is that the Church from late antiquity onward remembered a lay artisan of Aquileian origin who was believed to have died for the Christian faith in the Dalmatian persecution of Diocletian’s reign, and that his memory was kept in the liturgy of 7 September and in the relic cult of Split. He stands in the calendar as an example of a working layman rather than a cleric or monk, and later devotion naturally associated him with the trade of the fullers.
