Biography

Short Description

Anathalon, whose name appears in Latin and Italian sources in several forms including Anatalone, Anatalo, Anatolo, and Anatolius, is honored as a saint by the Catholic Church and is traditionally regarded as the first bishop of Milan. No contemporary documents from his lifetime have been preserved, and the outlines of his career are known only through later episcopal catalogues of the church of Milan and through hagiographical notices. These materials generally place him in the second or third century, although older legendary accounts, seeking an apostolic origin for the Milanese see, pushed his activity back into the first century. Because the sources are late and partly legendary, neither a year of birth nor a year of death can be established with any confidence.

Medieval tradition identified Anathalon as a Greek by birth and as a disciple of the apostle Barnabas. According to this account, Barnabas consecrated him to the episcopate and sent him into northern Italy to preach the Gospel, especially in Mediolanum, the chief city of the region. A related legend connected his mission with Saint Peter. Historians treat these stories as typical foundation legends. Major churches of late antiquity and the Middle Ages often claimed an apostolic founder in order to enhance their prestige and to situate themselves in the earliest Christian generation. The first bishop of Milan who can be verified from independent historical evidence is Mirocles, who participated in the Council of Rome in 313 and the Council of Arles in 314. In the traditional lists of Milanese bishops, Anathalon stands at the head of a succession that also includes the poorly attested figures Caius, Castricianus, and Calimerus before reaching the historically secure Mirocles.

The same traditions state that Anathalon’s missionary work extended beyond Milan to Brescia (ancient Brixia), and that he died in Brescia. Nothing reliable is known of the circumstances of his death or of the original place of his burial. His cult is principally Ambrosian, that is, it belongs to the distinctive liturgical and sanctoral tradition of the church of Milan associated with Saint Ambrose and his successors. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Anathalon on 25 September, calling him bishop of Milan, reputed disciple of Barnabas, and the first to preside over that church. Local remembrance in Brescia has also preserved his name. Like most saints of the pre-Constantinian and immediately subsequent centuries, he was not canonized by a formal papal process of the later medieval type; veneration arose from local cult and was eventually received into the wider martyrological tradition.

Anathalon is not known to have belonged to a religious order, nor do the sources record a spouse or children. He was neither pope nor patriarch; his office, in the tradition, was that of bishop of Milan, a see that would later become a metropolitan archbishopric of great importance in northern Italy but was not a patriarchal throne. Specific patronages of places, professions, or causes attached to his name are not securely documented in standard hagiographical reference works, apart from his general association with the origins of the church of Milan and his traditional connection with Brescia. His enduring significance is therefore commemorative and symbolic: he stands in Milanese memory as the first in the line of bishops, a figure through whom the Ambrosian church expressed its belief that Christianity had taken root in the Po valley in the earliest Christian centuries, even though the recoverable historical facts about the man himself remain extremely limited.
