Biography

Short Description

Saint Andeolus, known in French as Saint Andéol, is a Christian martyr of the late second or early third century whose cult developed in the Vivarais, a region of southern Gaul corresponding to the modern French département of Ardèche. Traditional hagiography identifies him as a native of Smyrna in Asia Minor and as a subdeacon formed in the church of Saint Polycarp, the celebrated bishop of that city. According to this tradition, Polycarp dispatched a small group of missionaries—Andeolus, the priest Andochius, the deacon Thyrsus, and Benignus, later associated with Dijon—to carry the Christian faith into Gaul. Andeolus is said to have taken as his field of labor the valley of the Rhône in the Vivarais, preaching among the local population.

The account of his death is set in the reign of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (193–211). The passio relates that the emperor, passing through the settlement then called Bergoiata on the right bank of the Rhône, had Andeolus arrested and, when the missionary would not abandon his preaching, ordered him to be executed. He is described as having been slain by a blow that split his head with a wooden sword, an unusual detail preserved in the legend, on the first day of May in the year 208. The corpse was thrown into the Rhône. A subsequent episode tells that a Christian woman of high rank named Tullia recovered the body from the water and saw to its honorable burial. The place of martyrdom later took the saint’s name and is known today as Bourg-Saint-Andéol.

Modern historical criticism treats this narrative with caution. No contemporary document confirms Andeolus’s existence, his connection to Polycarp, or the precise circumstances of a martyrdom in 208. Polycarp himself is generally thought to have died in the middle of the second century, which makes a direct commissioning of a missionary who then survived until 208 chronologically awkward. The written passion is a later composition, and the motif of Polycarpian origins for the churches of Gaul is a well-known feature of medieval Gallic ecclesiastical legend, comparable to the traditions surrounding Benignus of Dijon and other local martyrs. What can be affirmed is the antiquity and persistence of the cult: Bergoiata became Bourg-Saint-Andéol, a collegiate church was dedicated to the saint, and a substantial ancient sarcophagus—originally a pagan marble tomb decorated with mythological reliefs—was identified as his resting place and remained a focus of veneration.

Andeolus is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 1 May as a subdeacon and martyr. He is the patron saint of Bourg-Saint-Andéol. His relics and the associated sarcophagus were examined and translated at various times in the medieval and early modern periods; the monument is still preserved in the former collegiate church of Saint-Andéol in the town that bears his name. Beyond this local patronage and the liturgical commemoration, little else is securely known. He held no papal or patriarchal office, is not recorded as having belonged to a monastic order, and the legendary sources are silent on marriage or children. Veneration arose in the era before the formal papal processes of canonization, and no individual pope is credited with a decree of canonization.
