Biography

Short Description

Andrea Beltrami was born on 24 June 1870 in Omegna, a town on Lake Orta in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. He grew up in a Catholic family in a district where the pastoral and educational work of Saint John Bosco and the Salesians was already well known. Drawn to that charism, he entered the Society of Saint Francis de Sales as a young man, completed his novitiate, and made religious profession. His formation in philosophy and theology took place in Salesian houses in Piedmont during the last decades of the nineteenth century.

He was ordained a priest while still young. Either during studies or shortly afterward he contracted tuberculosis, then a common and often fatal disease. He accepted the illness as a share in the Cross and offered his sufferings for the Church, the Pope, the Salesian missions, and the conversion of sinners. Confined by declining health to community life in Turin, he continued a hidden apostolate of prayer, correspondence, and writing, including translations and spiritual reflections. Confreres remembered his patience, fidelity to the Salesian rule as far as strength allowed, devotion to the Eucharist and to Mary Help of Christians, and interior peace.

Beltrami died in Turin on 30 December 1897 at the age of twenty-seven. A reputation for holiness persisted among Salesians and in his native Omegna. The cause of beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified him, recognizing the heroic virtue of this young Salesian priest who had given a short life and his illness entirely to God. He is remembered as a model of youthful religious consecration and of priestly fidelity in suffering. His liturgical memory is associated with the date of his death.
