Biography

Short Description

Andrea da Fiesole, known as Andrea Scoto or Andrew the Scot, was a ninth-century Irish cleric who served as archdeacon of Fiesole in Tuscany and is venerated as a saint. Almost nothing about his early life can be established from contemporary records. Later medieval hagiography and local tradition present him as a native of Ireland—then often called Scotia, whence the epithet Scoto—and as the companion of Donatus, the Irish scholar who became bishop of Fiesole in the earlier ninth century, a tenure commonly dated from around 829 until Donatus’s death, often placed in 876. According to this tradition, Andrew and Donatus left Ireland as pilgrims, in keeping with the well-attested movement of Irish peregrini toward the tombs of the apostles and the churches of Carolingian Italy, and settled at Fiesole when Donatus was chosen for that see.

Once Donatus was bishop, Andrew is said to have served as his archdeacon for many years, assisting in the administration of the diocese. Donatus himself is a somewhat better-documented figure in Italian sources of the period. Andrew’s own activities are known chiefly through later legend and through his association with the church of San Martino a Mensola, in the hills between Fiesole and Florence. Tradition holds that he restored that church, which had fallen into ruin, and established a monastic community there. Some later writers describe him as a Benedictine abbot. Ninth-century evidence does not confirm a formal Benedictine profession; it is safer to say that he was a pilgrim-cleric who founded or restored a church and monastic house that later belonged to the Benedictine world.

Devotional accounts place his death on 22 August in the later ninth century, frequently about 877, at or near San Martino a Mensola. He was buried in that church, which became the centre of his cult. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 22 August at Fiesole, recalling that he came from Ireland with Bishop Donatus and served as deacon. A related legend, not independently verified, claims that his sister, a holy woman named Brigid (not to be confused with Brigid of Kildare), was brought to Tuscany and lived as a recluse near his monastery; she too received local veneration. These family details belong to medieval storytelling rather than to independently attested history. No reliable source records Andrew’s year of birth, a precise place of origin within Ireland, or a securely dated obituary.

Reliable information about Andrea Scoto remains limited. His memory was preserved by the church of San Martino a Mensola and by the diocese of Fiesole, and he entered medieval calendars as a saint of Irish origin who laboured in Tuscany, long before the era of formal papal canonization. Modern historians treat the outline—Irish pilgrim, archdeacon of Fiesole, restorer or founder of San Martino a Mensola, death in the later ninth century—as plausible, while regarding miraculous episodes, exact chronology, and kinship claims as products of later devotion rather than as established fact.
